Ever wished a slow speaker would talk just a little faster? Or maybe you'd like to skim through a presentation at high speed until you got to something really interesting?

All that is now possible with Google Video for business. Just select the video you want to watch, and you'll see a speed control in the player. Click the button to switch between 1.5x and real-time, or drag the pop-up slider to select the speed you want. The new speed setting is "sticky"...in other words, you can find particular sections of interest by dragging the position marker or clicking in the Scenes bar without dropping back to normal speed.

We've found that most videos are very comprehensible at 1.25x to 1.75x speed. If your video is captioned, you'll find that you can go even faster.

Give it a try. Once you start watching videos at 1.5x, you might never go back to real-time!

We mentioned that both of these features may be useful for schools, and now we'd like to make them easier to try.

As of March 31st, we will be offering 10GB of Google Video free to every Google Education Edition domain. This will give each school the ability to stream up to 30 hours of content of anything they want - be it 30 hours of Physics 101 lectures, 30 hours of little league soccer practices or 30 hours of commencement keynotes – or a mix of those.

When we originally added Google Video to the Apps suite, we offered it for free for a trial period, but promised a change in our policy this March (right now). And here's that promised change. Now you can store 10GB of video and trade out old video for new, knowing that your current 30 hours is always available on our servers.

So start your video cameras and capture your professors (or your students) in the act; we'll provide the storage; the popcorn's up to you.

Since we launched Google Video back in September 2008, we've been listening to customers and working hard to make Google Video even better. Today, we're excited to announce two major new features are available right now on your domain:

Captions We've added a new captioning feature which allows you to give viewers a deeper understanding of your video. Captions can help people who would not otherwise understand the audio track to follow along, especially those who speak other languages or who are deaf or hearing impaired. You'll find details and administrative information here.

Larger Uploads Starting today, users with Google Gears configured in their browser can upload videos of up to 1 GB in size, up from the 300 MB limit previously available. This is important to businesses and schools that need to host longer form or higher quality video. If you'd like to upload videos of this size, simply get Google Gears or Google Chrome to enable larger uploads today.

To add captions, create a timed text file for your video. Go to your video's play page and click 'Closed Captions', select your language and browse to your timed text file. Click 'Upload captions' to upload your text file.

To play a video with captions, click the 'CC' on the player. If more than one caption track language is available, select the appropriate one from the menu that appears.

Last week, we announced that we're turning down uploads to Google Video, and refocusing our attention on building a more comprehensive video search engine (in case you're wondering, Google Video search algorithms power YouTube as well as "universal search" from Google.com). We want to make it possible for people searching Google.com or Google Video to find any video, at any time, from any site. But indexing video presents some unique challenges, and if you have videos on your site, you're probably wondering how to make sure your videos are discoverable through Google.

We want video publishers to know that we've made it easier to submit your videos to Google. First, we've simplified the process that allows you to submit Sitemaps to Google. Second, we also extended our Video Sitemaps support to include Media RSS feeds. You do not have to specify the Sitemap file type—we'll determine the type of data you're submitting automatically.

The more information you make available, the easier it is for us to crawl your videos. Here are a few simple things you can include in your Sitemaps to make your videos easier to find:

1) Landing page URL: This is the page where the video is hosted. It's better to have a unique landing page for each video on your site.

2) Video thumbnail URL: Thumbnails provide a strong visual cue to the user. Your video thumbnail should be representative of a snapshot from the video, and should not be misleading in any way.

3) Title & Description: If these are accurate and descriptive, they not only help Google understand your video, but also help users choose the best video search result. Providing information about category, keyword tags and duration is always helpful.

Whether or not you have Video Sitemaps or MRSS feeds, of course, it's important that you make sure that Google can crawl and index your video sites correctly. Make sure you understand how Google crawls, indexes and serves the web. Review the Webmaster Guidelines that will help Google find, index and rank your site. We've also updated the Google Video Help Center to include more information for video publishers. While there's no guarantee that our spiders will find a particular site, following these guidelines should increase the chances of finding videos from your site in the search results.

At Google, we like to launch early, launch often, and to iterate our products. Occasionally, this means we have to re-evaluate our efforts and make difficult decisions to be sure we focus on products that make the most sense for our users.

In a few months, we will discontinue support for uploads to Google Video. Don't worry, we're not removing any content hosted on Google Video -- this just means you will no longer be able to upload new content to the service. We've always maintained that Google Video's strength is in the search technology that makes it possible for people to search videos from across the web, regardless of where they may be hosted. And this move will enable us to focus on developing these technologies further to the benefit of searchers worldwide.

There are still great options for people who want to upload content to Google, and we invite them to explore YouTube's dynamic global community or Picasa Web Albums. If you have questions or need more information please read our FAQ page.

We're confident this decision is the right one for our users, and we're looking forward to making Google Video an even better place for you to search and find videos from all over the web.

Have you ever wondered if anyone watches the videos you've uploaded? Or perhaps you've uploaded a video presentation and want to be able to illustrate its success with some numbers? We've added Insight to Google Video so that you can capture some of this information, and use it to optimize your videos.

With the launch of Insight, we're now offering more statistics for your uploaded videos. You can access this feature by clicking on the 'Reports' tab on your Google Video account page. The first tab gives you a convenient summary of the data.

From this summary, you can access specific data pages by clicking on the links for Views, Downloads or Popularity. You can also access these specific pages by clicking on the corresponding tabs at the top. Here, you can change the date range or focus on a specific region of the world to see how your videos are doing.

Rest assured you will still be able to see the statistics that were previously available through Advanced Reports (Views & Downloads). This information is now available right from your Video Status page. You can also click on the 'Stats' link, next to your individual video's status, to view the stats for that particular video.

Videos can be uploaded, shared with specific permissions, and watched by authorized viewers with no special hardware or software. Each school gets 3GB of video storage per user account, but admins must first whitelist specific users to give them permission to upload videos. Google Video is available for free trial in Education Edition until March 9, 2009, at which point it will cost $10 per user, per year.

How to access what's new:
Education Edition administrators can enable Google Video by signing in to the control panel, clicking 'Add more services' and then 'Add it now'. Administrators using a non-English version of the control panel must temporarily switch to the 'Next Generation' English version of the control panel to enable Google Video. Google Video will remain enabled after switching back to the non-English version of the control panel.

Once enabled, Google Video is available for whitelisted Education Edition users at http://video.google.com/a/example.com, but remember to replace "example.com" with your actual domain name.

One of our favorite aspects of TV view is that it provides an uninterrupted viewing experience. You can browse through multiple results pages and sort, filter or refine your search - all without interrupting the video you're watching. Videos need to be playable on Google Video in order to provide this seamless experience, and while most videos are, some are not. In order to make it easier to identify playable videos, these videos are marked with the playable icon as shown below:

Videos that cannot be played directly in the TV view can still be watched by following the link to the original hosting site. If you want to see only videos that are playable on Google Video in your search results, you can restrict your search to playable videos using the radio buttons under the search box:

Existing Premier Edition customers who have not opted in to automatically get new services can manually enable Google Video from the control panel. Sign in to the control panel, click 'Add more services' and then 'Add it now'.

Administrators using a non-English version of the control panel must temporarily switch to the 'Next Generation' English version of the control panel to manually enable Google Video. Google Video will remain enabled after switching back to the non-English version of the control panel.

Our Recommended Videos feature does just that. By logging in to your Google account and visiting Google Video, you will see multiple videos that pertain to your search interests. You can find these videos underneath the hot videos section of the homepage. Just like the hot videos, you can click on the arrow buttons in the top right corner to see more recommended videos.

While our search suggestions give you search term suggestions for individual queries you enter, these video picks are based on trends of search queries you've used, as well as other videos that you've watched. It's yet another way to discover interesting video content from across the web - this time, personalized for you.

To take advantage of this feature, you'll be asked to sign in to Web History. The "Hot videos" section of the Google Video homepage offers up the web's most popular videos, determined by how often they're being watched, shared and blogged about across the Web. If, like me, you think this feature is awesome, you'll love our latest update. Now, instead of only 12 hot videos, there are over a hundred available by clicking on the new pagination buttons on the upper right corner of the "Hot videos" section. Just like our TV view, the video you're currently watching isn't interrupted as you browse through the pages.

The "Hot videos" section of the Google Video homepage offers up the web's most popular videos, determined by how often they're being watched, shared and blogged about across the Web. If, like me, you think this feature is awesome, you'll love our latest update. Now, instead of only 12 hot videos, there are over a hundred available by clicking on the new pagination buttons on the upper right corner of the "Hot videos" section. Just like our TV view, the video you're currently watching isn't interrupted as you browse through the pages.

The Google Video team continually strives to make your video search experience more enjoyable. In an effort to do so, we have added a suggestions feature to help you discover more interesting videos. Sometimes the suggestions expand the scope of your search, and sometimes they make your search more specific--it all depends on what you searched for and which suggestion you click on.

To view your search suggestions, click on the "Also try" links on top of the search results to refine or expand your search.

For example, if you are searching for "kittens", you may see suggestions like "cute kittens", "funny kittens", "newborn kittens", "techno kittens", "treadmill kittens" and so on. Clicking on these suggested search terms will lead you to the respective search results page, and another set of suggestions. If you continue following through these suggestion links, your first search may very well turn into hours of exploration.

The suggestions feature is available across all views - TV view, Grid view and List view. Those of you interested in closed captioning may have noticed a new feature on this front- the ability to search only for closed-captioned videos. Naturally this is very useful for people like myself who can't hear the audio, but of course there are many others who either want the sound off or who can understand the writing better than the speech.

If you go to the "Advanced Video Search" page you'll see a new constraint called "Subtitles: Search only closed captioned videos". Try clicking on that check-box and doing an otherwise normal search; the results will include those videos that are known to have captions. Fun example: to see a list of all captioned videos on Google Video, check that box and restrict the domain to "google.com".

It's still not quite as sophisticated as we want it to be - it currently only knows about videos in Google Video, and doesn't yet allow you to specify a language of interest. Nevertheless it's another small step that we hope will encourage greater awareness and use of captions.

A related feature of interest that you may not have noticed is the ability to jump directly into a video at the point where captions of interest appear. If your search results include caption snippets, there will be a link called "Start playing at search term", which is extremely handy for long videos. In order to see it, you also have to select "List View" (the middle icon in the Results menu bar).

Here's a nice example - search for ["that's a tremendous gift"] . Make sure you've selected List View, and you should see a video featuring Randy Pausch. Clicking on the "Start playing at search term (50:16)" link will take you to a point slightly before the appearance of that caption.

Hopefully by now you've had some time to play around with our different views for search results and find the one that best suits you.

For fans of grid view, we've added a new feature to make it easier to find what you're looking for. Now, when you're viewing search results in grid view you can roll over the video image for more information about the video. By moving your mouse over a video listed in the results, you'll be able to see multiple thumbnails of the video as well as the video description. This will give you a more representative idea of what each video is about as you browse your search results.

We've also restored some popular features. For those of you who upload videos to the site, you'll be happy to hear that our Community features (comments and ratings) and Advanced options settings (ability to restrict downloading as well as embedding and regional restrictions) are back.

This is a tall order, and we're constantly working to make sure we have the latest and greatest videos. Ever wondered how we actually discover all the videos that make it into video search?

While we receive a small percentage of our videos from user uploads, we get the vast majority of them by crawling the web. We've gotten pretty good at this over the past several years, but of course it's helpful when webmasters tell us exactly where to look to find their videos. This is where a protocol called Video Sitemaps (an extension of the Sitemap Protocol) comes in. Video Sitemaps allow webmasters to give us links directly to their videos and provide valuable descriptive information such as a video's title, description, and length. We can then target our crawlers at these videos and pull them into the Google Video index, allowing them to show up in Google Video searches as well as searches on Google.com.

Some key information provided by a sitemap includes:

A link to the video's "landing page" (i.e., the link you'd visit in your browser)
A title of the video for us to display in our search results
A description of the video to accompany each result
The duration of the video
An image thumbnail that we can show in our search results
A link to an embeddable video player -- so you can watch the video in TV view

If you administer a website with video and would like to see your site appear in our search results, a Video Sitemap is definitely your best bet. Videos that we are able to embed will play directly in the TV view player when you click on them. Videos that cannot be embedded will display a thumbnail or filmstrip that links to the page where the video can be played. In addition to playing the video, clicking on a search result will reload the list of related videos on the right hand side of the page. Next time you're watching a video, try flipping through the related videos; you might find something even better that what you originally searched for! Just like search results, most related videos can be played directly in the TV view player.

There's something else we think you'll like. Have you ever asked yourself "What was that really cool video that everyone was watching a couple of weeks ago?" Well, you can use our timeline viewto find out. If you're wondering, for example, what was the most blogged-about video on April Fool's Day, it was Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" (thanks to YouTube rickrolling the world). If you're curious which video was shared most in October, it was Professor Randy Pausch's "Last Lecture", which has persisted as one of the most-shared titles on Google Video ever since. Try it out to discover (or re-discover) something interesting.

This year, I challenge you to think outside the box. What are you really thankful for? What could you possibly not live without?

When it's my turn around the table this year, I'm going express thanks for my parents and my grandparents, for the roof over my head, and for the new TV show Heroes, but I'm also going to throw in my thanks to this neat invention called the Internet. I'm sure you've heard of it. It's something millions of us use everyday, something that has become such an integral part of our daily lives that I don't think some of us realize how dependent we are on it. Doesn't this big guy deserve some sort of recognition? So here I go - I'm thankful for the Internet. Are you?
