We're happy to announce the launch of the canvas view feature to iGoogle users in the U.S., rolling out over the course of the day. The canvas view feature allows gadget developers to build richer content, games, and UI for iGoogle's tens of millions of users by allowing them to build powerful full-page applications. In addition, canvas view provides developers with the opportunity to monetize their gadgets.


To get started, check out the documentation and examples on the iGoogle developer website. The site includes detailed information about iGoogle as well as information on upcoming OpenSocial functionality.

We've launched a new feature for iGoogle that allows people to use a gadget collaboratively, similar to Google Docs. Its now possible for multiple instances of a gadget - on the home pages of different users - to access the same user-preference data, the part of the gadget state that is hosted by iGoogle.

We've enabled this for an initial set of existing gadgets where it makes sense - see the post on the Google Blog.

If you think it makes sense for your gadget, just add this line to your the ModulePrefs section of your gadget:

<optional feature="shareable-prefs">

This line tells iGoogle to present a new sharing UI for the gadget, prompting the user to specify friends to share data with and whether the friends should have read-only or write access to the shared data. The UI also offers the user a means to see who they are sharing the gadget with and modify access rights.

Its a simple sharing model - last write wins, and a reload is required to see changes made by others. I thought I'd let you all know about Google I/O, a developer event upcoming on the 28th and 29th of May at Moscone West in San Francisco. There are a lot of exciting opportunities at the event, including: breakout sessions, code labs, fireside chats, tech talks, and sessions that you, the developers, can hold yourselves.

The talks will cover a variety of topics, many of which focus on gadget-related technology. Be sure not to miss "Apache Shindig: Make Your Social Site an OpenSocial Container" and the related code lab. The two discussions will focus on deploying OpenSocial applications, but Shindig can be used to serve gadgets on your site, social or not.

What: Google Developer Hackathon: JavaScript APIs Google will be holding a hackathon to get you started on our JavaScript APIs! We will be doing short introductions of the APIs and then breaking up into groups for coding and comraderie. There will be plenty of Google engineers present to ask questions and get help from. It's cold and cloudy in Hong Kong and Taiwan this week, as our trusty weather gadgets indicate. At the Googleplex, where a quintessentially Californian winter is holding up, we had the distinct honor of hosting our Taiwan and Hong Kong gadget developer contest winners -- Hu Chih-Pao flew in from Taipei to tour our campus in December (see photos from his visit on his blog), while Alex Ng and Liu Chun-Yu visited us from Hong Kong two weeks ago.

Of the 190 submissions for the gadget contest in Taiwan, Chih-Pao produced a whopping 43 entries, including a real-time Taiwan Train Timetable gadget and a gadget for the Taiwanese traditional worship of the Buddha of Mercy:



Alex and Chun-Yu's innovative use of gadget technology caught our eye, with their real-time local Hong Kong TV program guide with keyword-activated YouTube views, as well as their Feng Shui gadget:



Japan's gadget awards last year also showcased great gadgets from a pool of 178 submissions, including:

The Earthquake information gadget:



The QR code generator gadget from our Grand Prix winner, kilo:




(QR codes are widely used in Japan to store and display information, particularly URLs, which can be scanned and launched from a browser-enabled camera phone equipped with QR reader software).

We hosted our illustrious Japanese gadget contest winners last year at our office in Tokyo -- check out our interviews with them here.

There are already some great tools and resources available like the Google Gadget Editor and the Developer Guide - and now we've got some brand new videos on the YouTube Google Developers channel on getting started with gadgets.

In case you missed the announcement over at the OpenSocial blog, we're happy to announce the first commit to the Apache Shindig repository today. This is the first step to fully open sourcing the stack that powers Google Gadgets and iGoogle today. The Google Gadgets team (and many others!) have been working to release several components that will eventually allow any site to host and serve gadgets.

This first commit contains both the Gadget Container JavaScript and Gadget Server. Though we still have much to add, the Gadget Container JavaScript already supports some basic gadget functionality, user pref editing, a layout manager, and the ability to choose where your gadgets are rendered - gmodules.com or your very own gadget server!

The group is officially staffed by two Googlers — myself, and Dann Lee — and unofficially by a set of talented Gadget Gurus — members of the community who've been identified for outstanding long-term commitment to the community.

Second, we'd like to point out a somewhat new article that you might not have seen yet: Gadget Caching for Higher Performance. It sheds light on the numerous ways the Google API can be used to save your bandwidth, while at the same time, decreasing the loading time of your gadgets.

More articles on gadgets will be coming soon, and when they are released, we'll make sure to let you know here. Stay tuned!]]>

Welcome to the new Google Gadgets API blog! Nearly two years after we first launched Google Gadgets on iGoogle, things have certainly changed. And because we have a lot of cool stuff to tell you about, we were inspired to launch this blog. Here are some highlights of what we've unveiled so far:

Thanks in part to Google Gadgets for Your Webpage, there are billions of gadget pageviews per week. You can also build gadgets for a number of other Google products including Desktop, Calendar and Maps. More recently, we've opened up access to the Finance API, where you can retrieve and display stock information within your gadget. For those of you who want to advertise with rich media, we also have Gadget Ads.

In addition to these, we've also redesigned the Gadgets website and hope you find our new homepage more useful and easier to navigate. And to keep up with the latest in what is going on with the gadgets family, we've created an API Overview page.

The gadgets world is growing faster than ever, so to keep in touch with the ever-changing landscape, check this blog frequently (or subscribe to the feed) for new features, news about more sites where you can distribute your gadget and other related updates.
