The holiday shopping season is quickly approaching, and we know merchants are busy planning ways to stand out to the right buyers and increase sales. We’re excited to present a way for active Checkout merchants to partner with Google to help drive Google Checkout leads and sales during the upcoming shopping season: You can sign in to your Google Checkout account to review the details and quickly set up a holiday promotion.

Google will market the promotion through AdWords ads, emails to buyers, and social networking posts to bring buyers to the Checkout Deals Page. Last holiday season, merchants who ran a Checkout promotion increased their Google Checkout sales by an average of 209%, compared to a 25% increase for merchants who did not participate.

You can participate in the Google Checkout Holiday promotion by offering shoppers your choice of a $5 off $30, $10 off $60, $10 off $100 or $20 off $200 discount (pre-tax and shipping), limit one per user. If you participate, we'll change your standard Google Checkout button on your website to the special promotional Checkout button that features an orange starburst labeled with the promotion discount. When the minimum cart requirement is met, the discount will automatically appear for buyers when they shop with Google Checkout from November 23, 2010 at 4:00 PM Pacific to December 16, 2010, at 4:00 PM Pacific.

Additionally, if you are an AdWords advertiser, Google will change the standard Checkout badge appearing on your Google.com AdWords ads to a new badge that features the promotion discount. These badges have been introduced to enable shoppers who search on Google.com to easily identify and take advantage of promotional offers. Merchants eligible for the standard Checkout badge are eligible for the new promotional badge at Google's discretion.

To get started, sign in to your Google Checkout merchant account at http://checkout.google.com/sell, go to the 'Tools' tab, and click the 'Promotions' link in the left-hand navigation to view the promotion details and accept the offer of your choice or decline the terms. Once you accept, Google will take care of the rest. No additional integration is required.

We’re looking forward to a fun and successful holiday season!

Posted by Jessica Smallman, Google Checkout Team

National Cyber Security Awareness Month may be coming to an end, but online security is something to think about year-round. With the exciting holiday shopping season coming up, we wanted to share some tips for keeping your buying and selling experience online safe and secure.

Beware of money-transfer and seller scams: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Never wire money to a seller you haven’t reviewed very thoroughly, and stay alert for phishing attempts. Note that Google Checkout does NOT support payments through wire transfer and will never ask for your username or password via email. See our previous post on fake Checkout invoices for more details.

Work with legitimate businesses: Before you make a purchase from an unfamiliar seller online, make sure to investigate them. For example, do a web search for reviews from other buyers with experience with the seller. Legitimate merchants should provide you with contact information that you can reference if you have any questions or problems with your transaction.

Make sure your passwords are strong: Don't reuse passwords across multiple accounts, and remember to change them periodically, especially if you suspect your account may be at risk. Check out more tips on how to choose a smart password.

Type web addresses into your browser's address bar: Never navigate to sensitive accounts by clicking a link or cutting and pasting the address. Instead, enter the address yourself, (e.g. type “www.bankofamerica.com”).

Only send information over secure connections: Look for the https connection in the address bar (and the padlock icon in your address bar if you’re using Google Chrome or IE) when transmitting any sensitive information like credit card or bank numbers. When accessing financial accounts, check that the website has an Extended Validation Certificate — the URL or website name should show up as green in the URL bar, meaning the organization that operates the website has been validated.

Avoid conducting financial transactions on public computers: Avoid logging into accounts that contain sensitive financial information (e.g. bank or credit card accounts or commerce websites) on public or shared computers. If you do access such information on a public or shared computer, remember to sign out completely and close your browser window after you're done.

Shopping online can be fun and easy, and Google Checkout wants it to be safe and secure as well. For even more information, visit Google’s Online Security Blog to read about keeping your data safe in the the cloud.

Posted by Eve Hu, Google Checkout Risk Operations

In keeping with our commitment to security for our users, and in recognition of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, we wanted to encourage everyone to be wary of spoofed Google Checkout invoices that try to trick users into sending money to scammers. A spoofed invoice is an invoice designed to look like it came from someone else — in this case, Google Checkout. We’re finding that these spoofed invoices are often related to fraudulent vehicle purchases, where the scammer persuades the buyer that the high-cost purchase will be protected by Google Checkout. In fact, the transaction is fraudulent and has nothing to do with Google Checkout.

Buyers have reported that the spoofed invoices are designed to look similar to Google Checkout invoices, with one important exception: payment is requested through wire transfer, money transfer services such as Western Union or Moneygram, or direct bank transfers. This is a clear scam signal because Google Checkout does NOT support money transfers in any of these ways.

A typical scam might look like this:

You are searching online to buy a car and find a listing for something you like at an incredible price. When you contact the seller, they suggest that you use Google Checkout to pay for the car. Then, they send you what they claim is a Google Checkout invoice that lists the price and has instructions on how to send them the money. The red flag, again, is that the invoice has instructions on how to wire money via Western Union or Moneygram, or via direct bank transfers.

Here are some additional tips for safer shopping and recognizing scams:

Google Checkout currently supports payments made by credit or debit cards only. If a seller suggests you can pay via wire or bank transfer with your Checkout account, don’t proceed with the transaction; it’s likely fraudulent.

Scammers may reference the terms “Verified Google Checkout Agent,” “Regional Manager,” “Purchase Protection Account,” or some other form of escrow account in their spoofed invoice. None of these terms are used on Checkout.

Scammers may request high dollar transactions to be broken down into smaller payments, sometimes with each payment going to a different person.

The price of the goods you are interested in purchasing seems too good to be true, or the seller claims to have the new hot item that is sold out everywhere else.

If you received a fake Google Checkout invoice, you may wish to file a report with the appropriate authorities and/or your regional fraud reporting center — such as the Internet Crime Complaint Center (www.ic3.gov), a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National White Collar Crime Center. For more information on scams in general, please see this post on the Google Security Blog.

Posted by Steven Chen, Manager, Trust & Safety

We know that savvy online shoppers are always looking for a deal, but sometimes it can be difficult to get the right service with the right price. A handy update to Shopping Buddy (previously featured on our blog under the name Google Checkout Promo Notifier) brings discounts plus ratings right to your Google Chrome browser. The extension now displays merchant ratings and reviews, so you can find promotions and learn more about a merchant all without leaving the site you’re shopping on.

The seller rating will display as a star with score from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) in the URL bar.
Some exciting news today on the Android Developers blog: Google Checkout is now supporting Android developers in 20 new countries, from Portugal to Mexico and beyond, bringing the total number of developer countries on Android Market to 29.

This comes at a very exciting time for Google Checkout. Looking back at the last year in particular, what stands out is the promising growth we’ve seen in the use of the service: The number of transactions on Checkout has tripled, the user base has grown 50 percent, and the number of active users is up by 120 percent -- all in the last 12 months. We’re now helping improve the online checkout experience for hundreds of thousands of sellers and developers, and tens of millions of buyers, in many locations around the world.

Checkout has also played a valuable role in enabling a fast, safe, and convenient purchase experience across Google products ranging from Android Market to YouTube Rentals. Looking ahead, Checkout will be featured as a payment method in upcoming initiatives like the Apps Marketplace, Chrome Web Store, and Google Editions, and we’re looking forward to working with an even larger set of developers, publishers, and buyers on them.

Like most of you, we’re focusing much of our energy right now on gearing up for the holiday season, and on helping merchants drive even more traffic and conversions from our rapidly growing user base during that crucial time of year. U.S. merchants should look for information about holiday promotions in your account and your inbox soon. (To be sure you don’t miss any promotion announcements, remember to opt in to receive emails from Google Checkout.)

Meanwhile, we want to thank all the sellers and developers who have helped us grow and improve Checkout over the last few years. We are more excited than ever to innovate for you, and we’ll continue to work toward delivering the fastest, the safest, and the most convenient purchase experience across the web and the mobile. Stay tuned!

Posted by Arun Balaraman, Group Product Manager

Imagine you’re selling at a market or expo and want to take credit cards. Rather than hassle with cash, you can use the new Android Payment Extension for the Google Checkout Store Gadget on your laptop to allow Checkout customers to purchase from their phones.

This extension helps merchants quickly set up a store and accept payments via Google Checkout and Android by following the steps below:

1. Create a Google Checkout merchant account and configure your tax on the Settings Tab
2. Use the Google Checkout Store Gadget Wizard to generate a webstore template
3. Fill in the Google Spreadsheet with information about the items you wish to sell
4. Create a Google Sites page and follow the wizard to embed the Store Gadget
5. Install the Android Payment Chrome Extension

Once your customer tells you the items he or she wants to buy, you can create a cart with those items on your laptop. You then click the green Checkout with Android button and have the customer scan the QR code displayed with their phone. The QR code directs your customer to the buy page where they can complete their purchase.

While this payment method may not be perfect for all cases, we hope you find it useful for setting up a shop on the go and that it inspires further innovation in the mobile and payment developer communities.

Posted by Peng Ying, Google Checkout

The reduced number of API notifications and the elimination of the requirement of obtaining SSL Certificates make it possible to integrate Google Checkout with your existing order management system in just a few hours.

If you’re already integrated with Google Checkout, you will not experience any changes with your current integration. However as part of this change, existing Checkout merchants will see a re-designed Integration Settings page. Instead of opting into individual features that were part of the API, you will now be able to select a single API Version. Details of each version are available in the API release notes.

This will also make it easier for sellers who have already integrated with Checkout to manage the API features they wish to use in the future.

We’re excited about this release and confident that it will improve the experience of developers as they add Checkout to sites. Please do share your experiences with the new Checkout API (and anything else Checkout related!) in our forums.

Posted by Igor Ginzburg, Software Engineer and Satyajeet Salgar, Product Manager

Unlike regular comments, all Sidewiki entries are ranked by usefulness so that the best ones are shown first. The element was built entirely on the Sidewiki API and can be customized in many ways to fit into your site. Sidewiki originally launched as a feature of Google Toolbar and as a Chrome extension - this element is our newest step in making Sidewiki more open and accessible across the web. If you'll be using the element on your site, let us know via @googlesidewiki on Twitter!

If you're looking for a way to add commenting to an otherwise static page, the Google Sidewiki element gives you an easy and simple way to collect and display comments about a page. One of the new and exciting features of the Sidewiki element is that it allows visitors to leave a comment even if they do not have Sidewiki or Google Toolbar installed. Like all Sidewiki entries, the comments in the element will be ranked to show the most useful items more prominently.

Checkout element
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qU0w4wiK3GA/S9s5lP1HqRI/AAAAAAAAACg/UMUeT98xnNM/s400/ss-checkout.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5466025884811503890" />

The Google Checkout element allows you to quickly and easily create an online store using a spreadsheet.
We're happy to share that the Advanced Buyer Messaging (or gift messaging) feature is now out of beta.

The feature, released in beta in January 2009, provides the functionality for your customers to add gift messages, add additional instructions, or request gift receipts. Over the last year, we've seen a number of Checkout sellers who have used this feature to improve the buying experience of their users.

For example, Always Brilliant and Serenata Flowers have both implemented Advanced Buyer Messaging to allow their buyers to specify gift messages and request a gift receipt. Espresso Royale lets buyers specify any special instructions they may have regarding the order along with a gift message.

We're making a few changes to the feature as we take it out of beta. Based on user feedback, we have streamlined the number of tags making the feature more straightforward to use. We will support only the gift-message, include-gift-receipt and special-instructions <gift-message><include-gift-receipt><special-instructions>tags going forward. If you are currently using any of the old tags, you can continue to do so, but we encourage you to make the switch to one of the supported tags which will give you the same functionality.

If you haven't used the Advanced Buyer Functionality yet, we encourage you to explore how these features may be able to improve your customer experience. Take a moment to learn more about how to allow you buyers to specify special instructions related to delivery or treatment of goods, specify a gift message or ask you to include a gift receipt.

Posted by Boris Mizhen, Software Engineer and Satyajeet Salgar, Product Manager</special-instructions></include-gift-receipt></gift-message>

We recently launched a new, improved Google Checkout acceptance logo. When you display the new logo, shoppers can now not only see that you accept Google Checkout as a payment method, but they can also read reviews from Checkout buyers who have completed a purchase at your online store.

Want to highlight your reviews? When shoppers click on the acceptance logo, a new window opens to display your Checkout reviews page. This page lets shoppers learn more about the kind of experience to expect from your store by showing your average rating and previous buyers' comments. The page also includes links that allow shoppers to easily find reviews about customer service, shipping refunds, and returns. In the case where you have responded to a buyer's review, your response will be displayed below the review to provide any necessary clarification.

Adding the new acceptance logo to your website is easy. Simply copy and paste the code snippet located in your Google Checkout merchant account into your website's HTML. Visit the Help Center to learn more.

Posted by George Reis, Software Engineer and Heather Folsom, Business Product Manager

We're pleased to announce a new feature that will allow Google Checkout merchants based in the U.S. to create and to run their own Checkout promotions at any time.

Starting today, you can sign in to your Checkout merchant account, go to the 'Tools' tab, and click the 'Promotions' link to create a Checkout promotion in less than a minute. You'll be able to specify the date and time you'd like the promotion to run, as well as choose from a variety of dollar-off discounts to offer your buyers.

Whenever you run a Google Checkout promotion, the standard Checkout button on your website will be automatically updated to display the discount amount and cart minimum. Additionally, for AdWords advertisers, we'll change the standard Checkout badge appearing on your AdWords ads to a Checkout badge that includes the discount amount as shown below. These promotional badges have been introduced to enable shoppers who search on Google.com to easily identify and take advantage of promotional offers.

Checkout promotions are a great way to attract new buyers, and we're excited to make this functionality more widely available.
In the spirit of National Cyber Security Awareness Month, we'd like to take a moment to provide some tips for keeping your financial information secure across the web.

At Google Checkout, the confidentiality of the personal information stored within your account, including your credit card and bank account numbers, is our highest priority. This information is stored on our servers with extensive safeguards in place, and we won't share it with anyone except under the limited circumstances described in our Privacy Policy.

In addition, here are a few tips to help keep your information safe as you browse the web and conduct business online:

When shopping online, investigate the seller before you buy. A legitimate business or individual seller should give you a physical address and a working telephone number at which they can be contacted in case you have problems.

Check for a secure (https) connection when transmitting any sensitive information such as credit card numbers.

Don't reuse passwords across multiple accounts, and make sure your passwords are strong.

Always navigate to your online banking account directly (by entering the URL in your browser or using a bookmark), not by clicking on links in emails.

Whenever possible, avoid logging in to your online banking account or entering any other sensitive information onto websites while using a public computer.

Always log out completely after using online accounts, and never save your passwords on public computers.

    Beware of money scams.

Although National Cyber Security Awareness Month only comes around in October, remember to visit the Google Checkout Security Center for valuable cyber security information year-round.

Posted by Jessica Smallman, Checkout Risk Operations

We've improved and reorganized the Google Checkout Developer Guide in several ways to make it easier for developers to choose and implement one of Checkout's integration options.

First, we've updated the left-hand menu and improved navigation throughout the documentation. We've also expanded the documentation to include all integration options, including email invoices, Buy Now buttons, and the store gadget. You can now either read more about which integration option is best for you or you can use the new recommender to guide you through a step-by-step questionnaire to help you decide.

In addition, we've reorganized the documentation into three main sections that are shown in the left-hand menu: 'How To', 'Developer Guide', and 'API Reference'. Two of the sections have been further divided into 'Part I: Setting up Checkout orders' and 'Part II: Processing orders'. In Part I, each integration option has a detailed 'How To' page that describes how to modify your website so that buyers can purchase your product or service through Google Checkout. In Part II, you can find details about the different ways to process those Checkout orders. In-depth descriptions of the HTML API and XML API for both Parts I and II can be found in the 'Developer Guide' section.

Please submit any comments or suggestions about these changes to the Developer Guide documentation category of the Checkout Merchant Forum.

Posted by Doug Kramer, Technical Writer

With the Merchant Risk Council Semi-Annual Meeting taking place this week, we wanted to tell you more about the fraud detection and protection that goes on behind the scenes at Google Checkout. Every Checkout merchant benefits from our industry-leading fraud detection systems, which allow merchants to increase sales and reduce some of the costs and risks of running an online business. Overall, Google Checkout merchants experience significantly less fraud than industry averages reported in CyberSource's 2009 Fraud Report.*

Before orders are even charged, Google proactively filters out fraudulent orders using our proprietary fraud detection technology. We supplement this technology by performing manual reviews and examining buyer information across multiple merchants.

For orders covered by our Payment Guarantee Policy (98% of all Checkout orders on average), you won't waste any time or money in performing fraud checks or identity verification, even if the AVS or CVV information doesn't match or you aren't familiar with the customer. With Payment Guarantee information available at a glance in your account, you can quickly review what you need to decide if an order is safe to fulfill. And rest assured that, if you meet the conditions, Google will be responsible for any unwarranted chargebacks on all orders covered by the Payment Guarantee.

Google even provides useful tools for the small percentage of orders that aren't protected by the Payment Guarantee. We'll provide you with valuable customer information and chargeback representment services on all orders. Because you know your business best, this buyer verification information lets you run your own fraud checks and decide which orders to ultimately accept. We'll evaluate all chargebacks received and fight them on your behalf whenever possible.

To learn more about Google Checkout's fraud protection, please read the details in our Help Center. And be sure to come talk to us at the MRC Semi-Annual Meeting today and tomorrow. We'll have representatives from Checkout and AdWords at the event on both days.

*Comparison made in reference to the following statement in CyberSource's 2009 Fraud Report: "Merchants have consistently reported an average loss of 1.4% of revenues to payment fraud."

Posted by Jessica Smallman, Checkout Risk Operations

Many merchants have requested a way to receive information about transaction fees through Google Checkout API notifications, and we're pleased to announce that this feature is now available.
At Google Checkout, we're constantly striving to improve our usability. That's why we've recently simplified and improved the installation and configuration process for the osCommerce Google Checkout module. osCommerce is a popular open-source e-commerce solution and the module is an open-source project hosted on code.google.com.

We've completely reworked the installation process by no longer requiring users to manually copy and paste large swaths of PHP code into their files. Instead, we've created an automated deployment app (shown below) that does this for you. This should ease concerns about lines of PHP getting copied into the wrong place. If you want to learn more about the installation process, you can take a look at our documentation, which contains a step-by-step walkthrough with screenshots showing exactly how it works.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 175px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_EuCTzLdp3vE/ScQEJgOSf5I/AAAAAAAACYo/Fju8iUR1y8k/s400/deployer.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5315378021519228818" />
For more details, check out our post on the Checkout blog.
One of our most requested features is a way to sell subscriptions through Google Checkout, and we're pleased to announce that this functionality is now available on our Beta Features page. Merchants will now have the ability to sell products and services that require recurring billing using our API.

So if you're already comfortable building your own carts using Checkout, you're ready to implement Subscriptions by consulting the documentation. Each billing recurrence is a new order, so everything you've learned about processing orders still applies. You can let us create these billing recurrences for you with Google-Handled Subscriptions, or if you'd like more control, you can create these recurrences yourself with Merchant-Handled Subscriptions.

Please try this feature out, and let us know what you think.
At Google Checkout, we're constantly striving to improve our usability. That's why we've recently made Checkout's installation and configuration much easier on the popular open-source commerce platform osCommerce.

We've completely reworked the installation process by no longer requiring users to manually copy and paste large swaths of PHP code into their files. Instead, we've created an automated deployment app that does this for you by looking for the appropriate PHP insertion points and adding the code where it's needed. This should ease concerns about lines of PHP getting copied into the wrong place. If you want to learn more about the installation process, you can take a look at our documentation that contains a step-by-step walkthrough with screenshots showing exactly how it works.

The post-deployment configuration has also been greatly simplified. We've now grouped the most important fields so they're easy to access, and the rest have been moved to a detailed control panel. There are also descriptions in the walkthrough of how to fill in the necessary fields. Both the app and walkthrough are available here.

We're excited about the improvements to the osCommerce Checkout module. Dan continued to work there throughout high school, building his lifelong passion for comics. He left the comic store behind to attend college and later worked at a number of high tech jobs, gaining experience in UNIX systems administration, release management, and software engineering. But by the year 2000, still Dan couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing in his life. Hours of soul-searching revealed that the missing piece was the excitement and passion that he had once experienced when working with comics.

Dan decided to get in touch with the owner of the comic book store. It turned out to be perfect timing because the owner of the store was ready to sell. Dan picked up everything he owned and moved back to his old neighborhood to run the comic book store. He reopened the store as Hijinx Comics and expanded on the traditional business of collectible comics and novelty items with a new focus on graphic novels and books focused on entertainment reading.

Because of the amount of time Dan had worked with comics as a teenager, he had keen awareness of the pain points related to subscriptions and inventory. Drawing on these experiences, he developed a software suite to manage the subscriptions and inventory of his shop and of a brand new online bookstore. Best of all, he opensourced the whole offering to help other comic book stores alleviate the same issues. From there, a side business grew that involved him consulting and implementing a management system and hosting solution to other comic book stores across the nation.

Today, Dan's working on Ver.2 of his project while Ver.1 runs his current business needs. Below are some excerpts from our meeting with Dan.

Q: Tell me about your Google implementation and if there were any obstacles.

A: I use a lot of Google Code products to build my own open source comic shop management system. I use Google Checkout for my online bookstore ( http://www.comicbookshelf.com ) and did the level 2 integration myself in my custom LAMP application. My web-based point of sale system uses all of the Gears APIs to bring down UI latency and to allow offline use, which are the two greatest sticking points to current adoption of similar systems. The documentation is well-written with one exception. It would be nice to have a cookbook section - that type is more helpful. More real-life examples in more detail, casual, reader friendly and a commonly used code section.
When we launched Google Checkout in 2006, we set out to create a fast, secure online shopping experience for our users. Now in our third year of helping merchants increase sales and attract user interest, we're announcing the decision to move from our previous standard fee schedule to a new tiered pricing model where rates decrease as merchants process more transactions through Checkout.

On May 5, we will be implementing a few changes to Google Checkout:

Google Checkout's transaction processing fees will transition to a new tiered fee structure, where the rates will vary depending on a merchant's monthly sales processed through Checkout. For more details about the pricing changes, please visit our U.S. fees page and our U.K. fees page.

With the new tiered fee structure, merchants can qualify for rates as low as 1.9% + $0.30 per transaction in the U.S., and 1.4% + £0.20 per transaction in the U.K.

We will also be discontinuing the AdWords free transaction processing promotion at this time. As previously announced, Google Grants recipients will still be eligible for free donation processing until 2010.

We're committed to the continued growth and development of Checkout and to helping merchants increase sales by driving more leads and higher conversions. Advertisers who use Checkout have the opportunity to display the Checkout badge on their ads, which has proven to help Checkout users convert 40% more than shoppers who have not used Checkout in the past. Stay tuned for more announcements about product enhancements coming soon.

Posted by Anita Barci, Product Marketing Manager

Since we started Google Checkout for Non-Profits in late 2007, we have been excited by the enthusiastic response we've received from the non-profit community. Over the past year, we've made donation processing simpler and more convenient for thousands of non-profits, benefiting causes such as Myanmar (Burma) cyclone relief, China earthquake relief, Earth Day, and many more. And throughout 2008, we provided all of the donation processing for free, ensuring that 100 percent of contributions went toward supporting those causes.

We will be extending free donation processing for another year, until 2010. However, in an effort to bring more consistency to the eligibility guidelines for Google's non-profit offerings, only those non-profits who are also members of our Google Grants program will be eligible for free donation processing. All other non-profits will transition to Checkout's standard fee structure on March 1, 2009.

If your organization is already a Google Grants recipient using Checkout for donation processing, please make sure to link your Grants account with Checkout by February 15 to continue receiving free donation processing without interruption. If you are not yet a Google Grants recipient and you meet the guidelines for the program, we strongly encourage you to apply. If you apply for Google Grants by March 1, 2009 and you're accepted, we will retroactively credit you for any Checkout fees incurred while your application was pending. For anyone who falls outside of our guidelines or who decides not to apply for a Google Grant, we realize this news may come as a disappointment, and hope that you'll still find Checkout's ease of use and competitive rates compelling reasons to keep using our product.

For those of you who do become Google Grants recipients, we think you'll find both tools to be effective in helping you increase your online fundraising, and even better when used in concert. Watch this video to learn more about how Grants and Checkout work together for non-profits.

Posted by Prem Ramaswami, Product Manager

As the important holiday shopping season draws near, we've compiled a list of tips merchants can use to increase their Google Checkout conversions.

1) Make sure that your "Google Checkout Accepted" logo is on all of your site's pages. Shoppers may arrive at your site at places other than your main landing page, such as product reviews or customer support. Make sure they know you offer Google Checkout even if they find your site in ways you didn't expect. Here's more about Acceptance Logos and how to use them properly.

2) Have your Checkout button placed "above the fold" -- the part of your webpage that's visible without scrolling. This is usually good practice for any element on your site that you want to prioritize.

3) Include a link to a "What is Google Checkout?" page underneath your Checkout button. Guidelines for implementing this Google-hosted page that answers basic buyer questions can be found here under the section labeled "Messaging."

We hope you find these tips useful for increasing your holiday conversion rates. And here are even more ways to help drive sales using other Google products.

Posted by Heather Folsom, Product Manager and Christian Yee, Product Marketing Manager
Google Checkout Team

If you've been using our Checkout Buy Now buttons, you're aware that these buttons only allow your buyers to purchase one item at a time from your website. But what happens if buyers wish to purchase more than one item? This is where the new Google Checkout shopping cart comes in. With the Google Checkout shopping cart, your buyers can add multiple items to their shopping cart, change item quantities, and remove items -- all without leaving your site. When buyers are ready to check out, they can complete their purchases with Google Checkout. The cart is quick to load and snappy to respond, so your buyers will love it. To see the cart in action, check out the Demo Store. To learn more about the cart's features, visit the overview page.

How do you get started? If you have an account, all you need to do to set up the shopping cart is visit the Google Checkout shopping cart page located under the Tools tab in the Google Checkout Merchant Center. Just enter your product information, price, and image location. The page will generate an HTML snippet that you can insert on your product web pages. To test that your button is working, just click it. A shopping cart should appear in the upper right hand of your browser window. If you want to customize the cart's look and feel or use more advanced options, you can do that too with this developer's guide.

We hope you enjoy this new feature.

Posted by Boris Mizhen, Engineer, and Heather Folsom, Product Manager
Google Checkout Team

Flagr is a social network based around the places you go and the things you see. Flagr's slogan explains it all: Bookmark the real world. This makes a question like this difficult to answer, but let me give it a shot...

In a typical day, here are some things I may do:

Draft a product brief: This is a proposal that outlines a potential new Checkout feature and presents a strong business case for why we should add it to the product. We work hard to ensure our time is spent developing the most effective features.

Mock something up: I'm a fairly visual guy, so I tend to get myself involved in the user interface design of my projects.

Reach out to merchants: Merchant feedback plays a big role in new feature development, so I frequently reach out to merchants to add them as testers.

Learn about other Google initiatives: As you might expect, there's a lot going on at Google. A big part of the product management role here is understanding all the other initiatives that are under way, so you can better grasp a) how your features fit into the bigger picture and b) how your team can collaborate with other Google teams to create even better products.

Try stuff out: I typically sign up for one or two web services in the commerce space each day, just to see what the competitive marketplace looks like.

Alyssa: What has been an incredible moment that you have experienced since joining?

David: A few months ago, I traveled around the world (literally) with 35 of my fellow associate product managers as part of an annual trip. We visited four countries over the span of two weeks: Japan, China, Russia, and Norway. Our schedule was jam-packed! We visited local Google offices, interviewed Google users, met with high-tech startups and venture capitalists, and toured all four cities.

As you may have guessed, the trip was full of incredible moments. But one morning, we woke up early to visit the Tsujiki fish market in Tokyo. The market serves as a central auction place for Japanese fish vendors and merchants. Thousands of merchants line up for their chance to bid on the latest catch -- huge, one-ton tunas that cost thousands of dollars each. Surrounding the auction are hundreds of local vendors, each selling a variety of unidentifiable (but edible) sea creatures. Some of these merchants are bargaining with customers, some are slicing and dicing fish with machetes, and some are transporting their loads at lightening speed on modified go-carts.

A hectic place to be at 5:00 am! As a sushi lover, you can imagine this was an amazing experience. What topped it off was the two pounds of raw fish I had for breakfast that morning. With so much supply, the prices were incredibly low and the fish was really fresh. It certainly reset my expectations for what good sushi should taste like.

Alyssa: What about when you are off duty?

David: When I'm not at Google, I enjoy throwing a Frisbee, exploring new and interesting places around the world with my fiancée, dabbling in some eCommerce ventures of my own, and -- of course -- playing with my Maltese puppy, "Maya." I'm also a big fan of the financial markets, where I like to trade option spreads. How do I spend Friday night? Watching a Netflix DVD, a Lost episode, or perhaps hanging out at Barnes and Noble with a great book.

Posted by Alyssa England, Google Checkout Team

Posted by Alyssa England, Associate Product Marketing Manager

Last week, China's Sichuan province was devastated by a 7.9-magnitude earthquake. Currently, we know that there are tens of thousands reported dead and hundreds of thousands who are wounded and homeless following this catastrophe. Buildings are in ruins and rescue efforts have been hampered by aftershocks and landslides. If you'd like to participate in the global relief effort that is under way to help those suffering in Sichuan, you can do so by making a donation here. Donations through this program will help strengthen relief efforts and assist survivors as they rebuild their lives and communities.

And now Google Checkout offers a unique way for you to contribute.

Starting today, you can use Google Checkout to make a contribution to an environmental non-profit on behalf of friends and family. Your donation will be indicated as a marker (using your zip or postal code) on a personal view of Google Maps. If the people you donated on behalf of follow your example and donate, they will be added to your map as well. And when your friends donate on behalf of others, their donations will also appear on your map, so you can see how your generosity grows.

To learn more about donating to an environmental non-profit using Google Checkout, visit our Checkout Earth Day page.
