Posted by Jonathan Berger, Google Checkout Buyer Product Manager

An important part of Google Checkout since we launched last summer has been helping users find convenient, secure places to shop through tight integration with AdWords, the advertisements on our search results pages. Merchants who decide to offer Google Checkout as a checkout option on their sites are identified by a shopping cart when their ads are displayed on Google. Today we're updating the shopping cart with a better image:

We expect the new image to help shoppers more easily identify Google Checkout merchants. We're also putting the shopping cart badge on ads in the Google advertising network. Some of you may have already noticed these changes in earlier experiments. We're excited to make these changes live.

However, some sellers have mentioned that 72 hours often isn't enough time, especially during holidays or long weekends.

In response to this feedback, we've extended the authorization period to seven calendar days for guaranteed funds. Now you can step away from the office without having to worry about charging orders so soon after you receive them.

If you miss this seven-day window, you can still charge your buyer, although you won't be guaranteed funds.
Posted by Jonathan Berger, Associate Product Manager

Back in September, we introduced a feature that allowed users to more easily find Checkout stores by filtering search results on Froogle. We got great feedback about this feature, and our users have continued to ask for even easier ways to find Checkout stores when they search on Google. Based on that feedback, we recently introduced some experiments and features that help users identify Checkout stores when they search:

- The first change we've made is a limited test of new Google Checkout badges on AdWords advertisements. Google runs experiments all the time to test new ideas and improvements, and Checkout is no exception. The experimental badge we're testing uses a Checkout button rather than a cart image to identify Checkout merchants. This test will appear on a very small percentage of queries and we look forward to learning from experiments like this so we can ensure Checkout continues to deliver value to everyone -- especially our users who are eager to find fast, secure places to shop when they search.

- In addition to new badges, we also recently made it easier to find Checkout stores in product search results. To provide some background here: when searching on Google, you'll sometimes notice "product search results" in addition to web search results. These links offer further relevant information about your query. To see this in action, try searching for "laser pointer" on Google.com; the clustered links at the top of the page are product search results. Product search results have been displayed on Google for a while now, and we recently added an extra link to this section so users who are interested can click through to view results from Google Checkout stores.

One of our core beliefs is to focus on the user. We know that when it's time to shop, our users often start by searching, and that they're looking for places to shop that are convenient and secure. Checkout addresses this need by making online shopping quick and safe, from search to purchase. As always, our goal is to improve the user experience by providing more relevant information whenever users choose to search and shop with Google.

Posted by Zachary Bailey, Merchant Operations Coordinator

Besides offering buyers a faster and more convenient way to shop online, Google Checkout can also help you lower your costs throughout the new year by processing all of your transactions for free through December 31, 2007. Say you currently pay 2% plus $0.20 per transaction and your average transaction is $50; with Google Checkout you can save an average of $1.20 on every sale you make. To take full advantage of this promotion, let buyers know that they can use Google Checkout by placing a Google Checkout acceptance logo on your homepage and on the landing pages of your AdWords ads.
Here are some tips for optimizing button placement -- and for boosting your Google Checkout conversions all through 2007:

- Choose a Google Checkout button that's the same size as your existing checkout button. Display these buttons side by side if possible.

- If you display your existing checkout buttons or links in different locations on your website, be sure you put a Google Checkout button next to all of your existing checkout buttons or links.

- Display the text "or check out with" between your existing checkout button and the Google Checkout button to make sure your customers understand their options.

- Insert the text "What is Google Checkout?" below the Checkout button, then link this text to a page on your site explaining Google Checkout buyer advantages. Here are some ideas for communicating the advantages of Google Checkout to buyers.

And here's an example of a site that has optimized Google Checkout button placement:

Posted by Brandon Hartness, Director of Ecommerce

Golfballs.com fills a golf equipment niche by providing personalized golf balls, bags, shirts, caps, clubs, and much more. We are very dedicated to website usability and the overall customer experience.

Google Checkout has been a great complement to our goals by providing a safe, secure, and most importantly, a very usable checkout option for our customers. We've seen that visitors who use Google Checkout convert at a significantly higher rate than our own checkout. The addition of the Google Checkout badge to our AdWords campaign has resulted in an increased CTR and a decreased average CPC. Our visitors seem to place a higher level of trust and confidence with us because of the badge. Customer experience aside, the savings we've experienced in credit card transaction fees have been very significant and is always a welcome addition to our P&L. When our finance department is happy, we are happy.

Overall, Google Checkout has exceeded our expectations, both in the customer experience it offers and in its reliability. We look forward to working with Google Checkout this holiday season and well into the future.

Just send us a shopping cart via an HTML form with name=value pairs, and manage the orders using our Merchant Center interface. You can easily specify shipping options and sales tax options in the shopping cart as well.

For more information on using the HTML API, there's a new Developer's Guide.
Posted by Simon Arthur, Founder and President, Big Blue Saw

At Big Blue Saw, we are showing the world a better way to do custom manufacturing. Our customers upload their designs to our website. We then make these designs come to life in metal and plastic through the use of advanced robotic machining technology like waterjet cutting.
But as with any new business, Big Blue Saw was facing several problems. We were not only a new business, we were a new kind of business. Potential customers thought we had a great idea, but were afraid to trust us with both their dreams and their money. To top it off, we actually received e-mail from customers telling us that they were uncomfortable using our existing payment processor.

We wanted to make sure that our customers felt as comfortable as possible with the ordering process. This is why we have given them the added option of using Google Checkout. The Google name may mean the difference between a customer and just another visitor to the site.
Since installing Google Checkout, we've had excellent feedback. Most of our new customers prefer using Google Checkout over our existing shopping cart and payment system. They seem really happy with both, our service and with the Google Checkout system. There haven't been any complaints or glitches with the system. Google Checkout's forward-thinking approach to e-commerce and customer relations is an excellent match for our forward-thinking approach to manufacturing.

Posted by Todd Jackson, Product Manager

Since launching Google Checkout earlier this year, we've received a lot of feedback on the features you'd like to see. Coupons and discounts have been a big hit so far with buyers, but until now, it's been hard to create coupons without being an API wizard. Now, you can create coupons right from the merchant center. You can specify $-off discounts, %-off discounts, and specify such things as "one per customer," "new customers only," and so on. To help you better optimize your discounts and sales, you can even track usage of the coupons and get reports.

Try it now on the Coupons page (requires a Checkout merchant account).
Posted by Andy Newlin, Web Operations Manager, Sierra Trading Post, Inc.

At Sierra Trading Post, our goal is to provide the highest-quality name-brand merchandise at 35 to 70% off retail prices, while at the same time providing a second-to-none customer experience. We recognize that customers are demanding a faster, easier, and more secure online shopping experience these days, and as an online retailer, we want to provide technologies that will allow for this experience.

As customers become more concerned about having their credit card information stored in many different places on the web (as a result of online purchases), we feel that a service that can provide a centralized location for storing this information married with the ability to use this information at many of the places they want to shop will become increasingly valuable. Google Checkout has been built in a way that satisfies all of these customer concerns, as well as several business ones -- by the use of AdWords badge, we are able to capture a more targeted visitor base; by the use of Google Checkout-specific coupons, we have the ability to run unique promotions concurrent to our own; and by the use of Google Checkout marketing efforts, we are able to attract an additional subset of online shoppers.

We have seen (at times) new customer rates higher than 60 percent, transaction fee savings upwards of 20 percent, and 1,000+ percent increases in Google Checkout sales due to word-of-mouth marketing campaigns. There have also been positive results on other levels, and we look forward to additional long-term customer and business benefits that this innovation will provide.

Even better, whatever you buy totaling $30 or more (before tax and shipping) at participating stores will automatically earn a $10 bonus. Now, one login lets you buy from lots of different stores, and also gives you a $10 bonus each time you buy. Look for the "$10 off" Google Checkout button when you're shopping online. It's the sign that guarantees your transaction will be faster, safer -- and $10 cheaper.

The results thus far have been impressive: the Checkout badge on search results has definitely increased our clickthrough rates and driven sales.

The ease of use and the confidence of the security of Google Checkout has enhanced our ability to meet the online shopping needs of our new and existing customers. Through both our sites, Odimo has benefited greatly from our involvement in the Google Checkout program.
Posted by Gavin Chan, Product Marketing Manager

Not too long ago we announced a new program for e-commerce providers to help them integrate Google Checkout into their shopping cart applications. In addition to helping with integration, we also offer incentives to get their merchants up and running with Checkout.

Well, e-commerce providers aren't the only group that can help merchants get started with Google Checkout, so we're opening up the incentive program to everyone who maintains a relationship with online merchants. That could include developers, web hosting providers and web designers, just to name a few.

Those who are eligible for the Merchant Referral Program will earn incentives for one year: 0.5% of all Google Checkout sales processed by the merchants they refer, and an additional $25 for each merchant that processes at least $500 in sales and 3 transactions with Checkout. So if you work with online merchants, apply today to start earning cash for the merchants you refer to Google Checkout.

Say you've signed up for Google Checkout and made your first purchase. You can make better use of that account by starting the search for your next purchase on Froogle.

Try a search for running shoes and then click the "Google Checkout Stores" link at the top of the page in the "Stores" column. We'll show you products that you can buy with Google Checkout, which means you can complete the transaction without having to fill in your address and credit card number all over again. In addition to making it easier for shoppers to find Google Checkout stores, this feature is one more way Checkout helps merchants attract more shoppers and sell more online.
Posted by Michael Adberg, Co-founder, WeaKness.com

The experience we’ve had with Google Checkout has been very rewarding in terms of learning, website traffic, sales, and saving money, so we’d like to share a bit of our story.
WeaKnees is a company that my friend Jeff Shapiro and I started a little over five years ago, based on our love of TiVo. We sell a huge variety of capacity-enhancement kits and parts, replacement parts, and most of all, new TiVos with huge capacity - up to 1800 hours of recording space or 200 hours of HD recording capacity.

Our workforce is almost always fewer than 10 people, and most of our customers haven't heard of us before their initial purchase. Google Checkout has been a perfect fit for a relatively small company like us -- from the buyer's point of view, they don't need to trust us with their payment data to purchase our products. Many are also happy to avoid re-entering information on our website that they've entered countless times before (name, address, etc.). They simply provide their Checkout login and password, and they're one step away from finishing the transaction.

From our perspective, the benefits go deeper. In addition to capturing extra business through increasing customer confidence, the Google Checkout badge is key. We receive a greater clickthrough rate, which raises our AdWords ranking without raising our cost. And, on top of that, we avoid paying fees for the credit card processing.
Through the last two months we've seen our Google Checkout volume increase weekly and we look forward to continuing that trajectory.

Posted by Martin Omander, Technical Account Manager

They say that good things come to those who wait. Well, the wait is over for the .NET sample code for Checkout integration. Last Tuesday, August 22nd, we published the code in the sample code area of the Developer's Center.

If you use Visual Studio to build your web UI, you can drag-and-drop the Google Checkout button into your page, add six lines of code, and start posting test orders to Google. If you use another editor, you will have to add a tag in your web page as well.

In either case, you should have a simple test application running within minutes, now that you don't have to start from scratch. If you have questions or comments, please post them to the .NET developer forum.

The source code is, of course, part of the package, and I encourage you to tinker with it and get a feel for how it works. As a matter of fact, we're planning to build an open-source process around this code, so that the community's fixes and new features can be incorporated and distributed. Stay tuned for details!

Posted by Lanny Morton, CEO, SportsCloseouts.com

At SportsCloseouts.com we specialize in selling name-brand sporting goods at steep discounts. We decided to offer Google Checkout because we wanted to provide our customers with a more convenient checkout process.

In addition to improving our customers' shopping experience, Google Checkout has helped us generate more sales and lower costs. Since we first started offering it last week, we've processed over $2,000 in sales through Google Checkout. And because of our investment in AdWords, we've already saved $50 in transaction fees. The Google Checkout badge has also substantially increased the traffic we receive from AdWords—in just the last week, our average clickthrough rate has increased by 67%, from 1.5% to 2.5%. We've also seen our cost per conversion come down.

Overall, we're very pleased with our experience with Google Checkout. In only a week, it's exceeded all of our expectations, and we're excited about growing with the product.

We're committed to giving merchants a wide range of these providers to choose from, which is why there's a new incentive program that gives existing "storefront solution" providers even stronger incentives to integrate their platforms with Google Checkout.
Here are a few of the benefits for those of who are e-commerce providers:

1.
Posted by Scot Wingo, CEO, ChannelAdvisor

At ChannelAdvisor, we provide software and services that empower online retailers to manage search (paid and natural), comparison shopping engines and online marketplaces as online sales channels. We work with retailers of all sizes, from the very large to the very small. When we first heard about Google Checkout, we knew folks would immediately embrace it -- and in retrospect, that was an understatement! Because of their entrepreneurial nature, online merchants immediately understand and want to take advantage of what we call the three economic benefits of Google Checkout:
1. The competitive 2% and $0.20/transaction processing fees.

2. The free transaction processing credit that gives merchants a huge economic boost on their existing AdWords spend. Most merchants look at reinvesting that benefit into higher bids, more keywords or both.

3. The Google Checkout badge (the little shopping cart next to your AdWords ads), which can give merchants' sponsored listings a clickthrough boost, which can further increase their ROI.

Our merchants are really loving Google Checkout -- so I wanted to highlight two customers who exemplify what we're hearing:

First, Mark Fitzgerald with Grapevinehill.com (they sell shoes, not wine). He says, "We've seen a material number of buyers choosing Google Checkout, so we're really enjoying the increased AdWords ROI. We absolutely love the free payment processing credits we are earning."

Second, John Wieber at Laptopbroker.com has also seen strong Google Checkout buyer adoption. John says,"We have not had a single chargeback or transaction issue. Most importantly the use of the Checkout via ChannelAdvisor Merchant is simple and quick. We are confident that Google will quickly enhance its service to become the best solution on the Internet."

So that's our take. Thanks to the team for not only inviting me to be the guest blogger today, but for creating such a great product. We're all eagerly waiting for what new enhancements will be coming, and to see how things go this holiday season with Google Checkout.

Posted by Alison Bjerke, Google Base Operations

Because Google Checkout and Google Base are so well integrated, you can upload information about your items to Base and sell them at the same time. Here's how:

1) Click on the "Sign In" link on the Google Base homepage.

2) Click on "Post an Item," click the "Choose an existing item type" dropdown menu, and select the item type ("Products" or "Vehicles").

3) Fill in the fields on the "Edit item" page. The more relevant information you include, the better we can match searches to your item.

4) Click "Edit" next to the Payment header and select the "Google Checkout" checkbox, which tells us that you to include a "Buy button" on your hosted page enabling customers to use Google Checkout when they buy from you.

5) At the bottom of the page, click on "Publish." You'll be asked to sign up for Google Checkout. If you don't want to include your bank account information immediately, that's okay; you can provide this information later.

6) You'll receive an email when someone buys your item.

Once you've posted a single item with the Checkout payment option, you'll be able to use the same account to sell other items too. You can manage your order history, edit items, and post additional items from the same dashboard. If you have lots of items to submit, you can also create a bulk upload and specify Checkout as a payment option. Google Base will create individual pages with a "Buy button" for each item in the bulk upload -- and you'll be on your way to making sales without having to maintain an independent site.

Posted by Tim Maly, Head of Checkout Operations

Besides helping drive more leads to your site and increasing your sales, one of our top priorities is fraud protection. We've implemented a system to detect and prevent it, including such industry-standard checks as address and card verification, as well as advanced risk-modeling techniques. We also use cross-industry resources like global fraud blacklists to prevent known fraudsters from using Checkout.

And we supplement our systems with a dedicated team of risk specialists -- people who manually review high-risk transactions to minimize your chances of shipping products to fraudulent buyers. We manually review a very small percentage of transactions, and we take the potential effect of this review time on order processing very seriously.
That's why we are constantly evaluating and streamlining the review process, working to minimize the impact on order processing while still helping protect your business. We acted early on to address the feedback we received from some merchants about the review process, taking steps to streamline it, reduce review times, and communicate with sellers more clearly about our fraud-prevention efforts. We've also been working to fine-tune our systems so they're even more effective at identifying transactions that warrant review. We're committed to constantly improving this area and the entire product, so please let us know how we're doing and what we can do to ensure Google Checkout always serves your business.

Posted by Joel Slovacek, Senior Operations Specialist

As Gavin mentioned before, Google Checkout is dedicated to preventing fraud as well as protecting you and your business from financial losses due to fraudulent transactions. We do a lot to protect you before you even charge or ship an order by verifying accounts and reviewing orders to make sure that you have legitimate buyers. You'll even be able to see this information on your orders so that you can be better informed about proceeding with any transaction.
Of course, fighting fraud is a team effort, and we need your help. Following some key best practices can ensure that together we safeguard your business. Specifically:

1. Request signed proof of delivery for high-value orders
Without signed proof validating that a package was indeed delivered, it becomes difficult to counter a buyer’s claim that they "never received the package."

2. Keep shipping records and documentation
Documentation is the name of the game in chargeback cases. Keep shipping and packaging information close at hand. Archive all customer correspondence back and forth about an order. The more information we have, the better able we are to represent your interests.

3. Ship only to the shipping address recorded within your Google Checkout Seller Interface
Fraudulent buyers sometimes try to change the shipping address right before you ship goods. Insist on shipping to only the address on record in your Google Checkout account, as this address is the one our risk systems have analyzed.

4. Respond to Google promptly on chargeback information requests
The card associations' have strict reply windows for contesting chargebacks. Therefore, responding quickly to Google's inquiries for information is critical, as it helps give us the time we need to work with you to build a strong case.

Some merchants have asked, "Am I protected for intangible goods like digital downloads and services?" The short answer is that cases like this are much harder for sellers to win. The card associations have historically made it very difficult for sellers to prove that a digital or intangible good chargeback case is invalid. We will continue to work with you as much as we can including using any methods you have used in the past to win these sorts of cases, but do recognize that it can be difficult to win these cases. As a result of the card associations’ position on digital/intangible goods, these transactions are not covered by the Google Payment Guarantee program. Do note that we are committed to working with the associations to build better ways for all merchants to be protected against invalid claims on digital goods and services.

Doing business always involves some risk, and this especially holds true when serving customers online. However, by keeping these best practices in mind, as well as following Google’s chargeback protection policies, you can significantly minimize your exposure to fraudulent transactions.

Rest assured that maximizing your sales and profits while minimizing your exposure to fraud losses is one of our highest priorities and we're committed to working with you to make online commerce faster, easier, and safe.

Posted by Eva Hung, Strategic Partner Manager

We're thrilled to see Google Checkout helping merchants across the web, and we hope the service has helped your store already. I'd like to share a few best practices we've been seeing that may help you be even more successful. Here it goes:

1. Charge orders within 72 hours
When a buyer confirms a purchase, you'll receive an order, and Google performs the authorization for 100% of the order amount. Then you must charge the order within 72 hours (that's 3 days) to be guaranteed the funds. More details are here.

2. Be sure to get the order and risk info before shipping
We strongly recommend that you don't ship an order until you've received the new order notification and risk assessment. Both of these notifications are critical to accurately evaluate each order's risk level - and we believe that merchants who review both prior to shipping will see more successful transactions.

3. Watch for cancelled orders
In some cases, orders in your merchant center may show up as "cancelled" after a successful authorization and a positive risk assessment. This might happen when you charge the card or capture funds after 72 hours, and the attempt to capture funds wasn't successful. In this situation, the buyer is notified that he or she needs to provide a new credit card. If that doesn't happen within 72 hours, the order then appears as "cancelled" in the mechant center. You might also see cancelled orders when a credit card expires after an initially successful authorization. In fact, Checkout's first line of defense works to prevent fraud from even reaching you: we proactively filter out fraudulent transactions using Google Checkout's proprietary fraud detection technology.

To help you fight fraud, we developed the Chargeback Resolution policy, which covers all Google Checkout transactions. This policy helps you efficiently manage any chargeback you receive; we even fight them on your behalf. Our team will work closely with you to ensure that you have the best chance of winning a dispute. If you already have tools and systems in place to handle chargebacks, we won't stand in your way -- you retain all the rights to directly contest chargebacks yourself.

An important aspect of the Chargeback Resolution Policy is the Payment Guarantee, which offers an additional layer of protection by guaranteeing payment for transactions that follow best practices in fraud prevention. Transactions covered by our Payment Guarantee are marked as "Covered by Payment Guarantee" on the Order Details page of the transaction. If you don't see this designation on a given transaction, don't worry—it's still covered by the Chargeback Resolution policy.

Here are a few of the more common questions we're hearing:

What is AdWords?

AdWords is Google’s search advertising program, which displays ads alongside Google search results and on search and content sites in the Google Network. When you create an AdWords ad, you choose keywords for which your ad will appear and specify the maximum amount you're willing to pay for each click. You can still provide your customers with a fast, safe, and convenient checkout experience. As far as fees go, you’ll only be charged 2% plus 20 cents per transaction for the sales you process through Google Checkout.

What are the benefits of using Google Checkout with AdWords?

There are two main features you can take advantage of when using both programs together: the Google Checkout badge and free transaction processing. The Google Checkout badge is a small shopping cart icon that appears on your AdWords ads when you offer Google Checkout on your website. It communicates to buyers that shopping with you will be fast, convenient and secure.

Free transaction processing enables you to process $10 of Google Checkout sales at no cost for every $1 you spend on AdWords. For example, if you spent $1,000 on AdWords last month, this month you could process $10,000 in Google Checkout sales for free.

Why is Google Checkout integrated with AdWords?

Our goal is to improve the entire online sales process for sellers, from generating leads through online advertising to processing the sales that result. Shoppers often begin the purchase process by searching online and looking for places to buy. One interesting stat from Shop.org: 37% of all online purchases start with a search. When shoppers search, the Google Checkout badge helps turn more of these queries into leads by making it easy for users to identify stores that accept Google Checkout. Once customers click through to the store and are ready to buy, Google Checkout offers a streamlined checkout process that helps convert those leads in to sales. Finally, when it’s time to process sales, Google Checkout works with AdWords to reduce transaction processing fees to zero. We think there's a natural relationship between online advertising and transaction processing -- and that's why you see the integration at every step in the online sales and marketing process.
