With so many different types of websites adopting OpenSocial it has become clear that a "one size fits all" approach isn't appropriate for the OpenSocial spec. Containers have different types of data they want to make available to clients (sometimes it's social data, sometimes it's not), and some want to expose that data via web services, while others wish to use gadgets. As such, modularity was a key goal in the OpenSocial 1.0 iteration, allowing implementers to pick and choose the elements of OpenSocial that make sense for their use cases. OpenSocial 1.0 also defines extension points so containers can add functionality not covered in the spec, but do so in a standard way, making it easier to fold such extensions back into the spec or share extensions across containers.

To accommodate the varied use cases of OpenSocial containers, OpenSocial 1.0 has been revised to include four compliance models:

Core API Server - For containers that wish to expose data in a standard way though web services.

Core Gadget Server - For containers that simply want to be able to render gadgets.

Social API Server - For containers that wish to expose social data through standard web services that are consistent across containers.

Social Gadget Server - For containers that want to render gadgets and provide them access to standard social data.

The spec itself has been reorganized along these lines as well, consolidating all data definitions into the Core Data Spec and Social Data spec, and creating a separate file for each of the four compliance models.

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, on behalf of the OpenSocial Community

Greetings…

As many of you know, IBM is committed to building and advancing open standards and platforms. Openness fosters an ecosystem of innovation, promotes customer choice, and allows enterprises to build solutions that best meet their needs. We’ve been working with the OpenSocial Foundation to help define and implement the requirements of enterprise customers.

Recently, we put together an article that can be found on DeveloperWorks that describes how you can use IBM Mashup Center to build complex Web 2.0 applications that use OpenSocial gadgets by simply dragging them from a pallet and dropping them on a page.

However, OpenSocial gadgets are not the only component model available, for example there are OpenAjax widgets as well as one that IBM uses for many of our products called iWidgets. Because of the importance of interoperability with previously deployed products that leverage different component models, this article demonstrates how you can build a mashup using different types of gadgets/widgets and still have them interoperate and communicate with each other. This interoperability is achieved by leveraging the OpenAjax Hub, a proven technology for inter-gadget communication available from the OpenAjax Alliance.

The article on DeveloperWorks represents an initial step. Members of the OpenSocial Foundation and the OpenAjax Alliance are now working together to support inter-gadget communication into the next version of OpenSocial by integrating the OpenAjax Hub. The designs and work items can be found on the OpenSocial wiki.

Feel free to jump in and help continue to evolve OpenSocial for use in enterprise environments.

Posted by Mark Weitzel, IBM SWG Strategy & Technology, Emerging Standards Team

As one of the leading social networking sites in China, renren has always been a close partner of OpenSocial, following all the product and technology progress of OpenSocial. After one month of intensive development and testing, the renren Open Platform formally announced the support for OpenSocial 0.9.

This OpenSocial upgrade on Renren consists of the following progress:

Full support of all the features of OpenSocial v0.9

A more friendly payment interface

Support for the RESTful API of OpenSocial

More useful info on the wiki

After one year’s growth, over 2,000 third party applications have been launched on the renren Open Platform. A batch of top applications have acquired millions of users. In order to build a healthy and open environment for the developers to unleash their talents and realize the entrepreneurship, the renren Open Platform keeps improving the functionality and efficiency of its own API, and firmly chose OpenSocial as a open API standard.

OpenSocial helps developers to reduce the cost of development and implement features effectively. Especially for the overseas developers, it is quite easy for them to transplant the hot oversea OpenSocial-supported applications to China. The Renren Open platform has benefited a lot from OpenSocial.

With innovation and openness, the Renren Open Platform will continue the partnership with OpenSocial, together with global developers, and drive the new Open Era of China internet.

Bo Li, Fusong Li and Jing Huang, renren.com

In just over two years, social applications have greatly enhanced the user experience on social networks. The number of app installs among social networks has climbed into the billions, creating an industry with hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue. In this series of blog posts we are going to cover a wide range of topics such as business models, characteristics of successful apps, best practices, and metrics/stats.

Historic Overview

The industry started out with the introduction of the Facebook Application Platform but has since expanded to many other social networks all over the world thanks to the OpenSocial standard. Social networks that benefited from adoption of OpenSocial include MySpace, orkut, hi5, Yahoo, and more than 20 other social networks. You can visit the OpenSocial

wiki <http://wiki.opensocial.org>for technical details, tutorials and samples, and check out the Containers <http://wiki.opensocial.org/index.php?title=containers> page for a comprehensive listing of all the OpenSocial networks along with traffic and demographics data.</http://wiki.opensocial.org/index.php?title=containers></http://wiki.opensocial.org>

In a short period of time, social applications have gone through two distinct phases in terms of feature richness and monetization methods. The first phase was dominated by apps providing simple social interactions such as self-expression or giving gifts. The second phase exhibits increasingly sophisticated characteristics in apps such as game design patterns (levels, points, rankings, etc.) and user generated content.

Business Models Overview

The business models of social apps have closely followed the development of social apps. In the first phase, the most revenue was generated from traditional display ads, supplemented by affiliate/referral offers and app installs. This worked well for simple interactive apps with relatively low engagement because users quickly moved on to next thing, be it an ad, a link or another app install. In this phase, less engagement by users in apps kept page view inventory in balance with available ads, resulting in high eCPM and profits for developers.

As apps matured in sophistication and richness, users became much more engaged with apps, less inclined to click on ads, links, or another app installs. Higher engagement also generated much higher demand for page view inventory, outweighing the supply from ad networks and therefore reducing eCPM rates. Out of necessity, app developers learned to take advantage of high user engagement by selling virtual goods, and in doing so, creating virtual economy business models that have provided the second boost to the ecosystems of social apps.

Stay tuned as we explore the business of social apps in upcoming posts on the OpenSocial blog.

Posted by Shawn Shen, Google Developer Relations

Today we released Ning Apps, or third-party applications based on OpenSocial 0.8, that serve as new, rich features for our 1.5 million+ Ning Networks and 33 million users.

Thanks to OpenSocial and more than 90 Ning App developers, our Ning Network Creators now have an even greater choice over the features and applications they can add to Ning Networks to make them exactly right for a given topic, interest or passion.

If you don’t know about Ning, we’re the social platform for the world’s interests and passions online. Through the power of Ning Networks, we bring the context of topics, interests and passions to social networking. We’ve been at work on Ning Apps in a private beta for a few months now and our Network Creators love Ning Apps for three key reasons.

First, with a single click, a Ning Network Creator can now add Ning Apps to expand the functionality of their Ning Network and increase engagement by their members. Most social platforms rely exclusively on members adding applications to their profile pages, but when a Network Creator adds a Ning App, that Ning App is available to all of the members of that Ning Network in a flash. This means that with one action, a Network Creator can make their Ning App available to hundreds, thousands or even millions of people instantaneously. This is a different – and we think better – approach to application distribution.

Second, with the breadth of Ning Apps, the options on Ning Networks are infinite for Network Creators. Here are some examples of how Ning Networks can use Ning Apps to engage their unique audience in a relevant and effective way.

For Artist, Musician or Entertainment Ning Networks

Sellit online store to sell merchandise

Ticketmaster or LiveNation to sell event tickets

Qik to stream mobile video or Ustream.tv to live video chat from a live event

For Activist and Non-Profit Ning Networks

Social Giving by Pinc to support fundraising efforts

Marketplace Classifieds to allow people to post and search local ads for more volunteers and resources

BlogTalkRadio to host live radio shows

PollDaddy to rapidly gauge members level of involvement

Huddle to share workspaces and collateral

Tungle.me to schedule meetings and mobilize members

WordPress to display blog posts

For Sports Fan or Extreme Athlete Ning Networks

NewsShare to share highlights and stories

Emote to share real time reactions to games and players

You can see the Full Ning Apps Directory at about.ning.com/ningapps.

Third, Ning Apps are completely integrated into Ning Networks by design. Ning Apps support gadgets.skins, allowing them to automatically inherit the visual style of the Ning Network to which they're added. Additionally, each Ning App by default is designed to write to a member's Latest Activity feed, send messages on behalf of the member (via requestSendMessage) and drive distribution using a Ning Network’s default viral sharing options.

If you're a developer interested in more info, please check out our Ning Developer Network. If you're a Ning Network Creator, please visit the full Ning Apps Directory on your Ning Network to start adding Ning Apps today.

Posted by Jay Parikh, Senior Vice President of Product Engineering at Ning

Those of you who were around for the early days of OpenSocial might remember that one of the very first test implementations ran on iGoogle. Since that early version more than a year and a half ago, the iGoogle team has worked hard to get the experience right. Today we're pleased to announce that, starting this week, iGoogle supports OpenSocial gadgets in both the US and Australia.

The 19 social gadgets that launched today offer iGoogle users new ways to make their homepage more useful and fun. Gaming fanatics can compete with others in Who has the biggest brain? or challenge their fellow Chess or Scrabble enthusiasts to a quick match. News enthusiasts can add media-sharing gadgets from NPR, The Huffington Post, and YouTube.

Developers using the OpenSocial API can now reach the tens of millions of iGoogle users in the US and Australia, and we plan to roll it out to more users soon. If you're interested in writing you own social gadgets for iGoogle, check out the full announcement on the iGoogle developer blog.

Posted by Dan Holevoet, Google Developer Programs

Hello, my name is Matthias Häsel, and I am a Senior Product Manager at XING, the leading European online business network. Over 8 million members use XING in 16 languages to do business, find jobs, and further their careers. XING helps members find contacts and stay in touch with them with customized networking solutions and services.

It gives me great pleasure to announce the XING Partner Ecosystem to the OpenSocial community. XING’s members will benefit from a wide variety of partner applications on the XING platform, all made possible via OpenSocial.

XING’s partners are able to create applications using OpenSocial v0.8 and then easily integrate those applications into the XING professional network. The applications are firmly integrated into the core functionality of XING, using OpenSocial's People, Activities, and Notification services. The applications are thus able to leverage XING’s “business graph” of connections between professionals to make the applications engaging and rewarding for XING’s users.

What’s most exciting about the XING Partner Ecosystem is that it is a win-win-win for everyone involved:

XING’s members win because they benefit from the useful applications we introduce for various specific user interests.

XING’s partners win because their applications are made available to all of the users on the XING platform.

XING wins because our service becomes more valuable to our members and partners.

We have 16 launch applications from 13 partners from 7 different countries, specifically Austria (ZCOPE), Canada (Tungle), Finland (Dopplr), Switzerland (Doodle), the UK (Huddle), the USA (SlideShare) and Germany (WELT online, Süddeutsche Karrierecamp, Wallstreet:online, DW-World, travelload, Mindmeister and Spreed, as well as our own applications).

The XING launch apps represent our focus on both locally relevant and globally valuable applications. We host many applications that function in multiple languages, as well as several apps that are specific to the German-speaking markets.

This is just the beginning. We will be adding more and more apps in the future.

Got an app that you think would be suitable for XING? Here are our guiding principles for getting new apps onto the XING platform.

Open — we are open to launching anyone’s application if we believe it will provide user value. In the end, the XING users will decide which apps they prefer. So, we are OPEN for apps. Come one, come all, with your great applications!

Professional — not just any application, but apps that are suitable for a professional network and that provide value to the business community in the markets we serve.

Rewarding — apps that provide a return on time investment to our users.

Do you think your app idea meets our criteria? Visit our OpenSocial Partner Community to learn more.

But don’t just read about the apps. I encourage you to check them out - and give us your feedback on them! UserVoice has proved to be just the right tool for that. Simply click on the big button labeled “feedback” on the right side to give us your ideas and suggestions and to vote on them along with other XING members.

To learn more about the XING Partner Ecosystem, please visit: https://www.xing.com/opensocial.

Posted by Matthias Häsel, XING Team

Apache Shindig aims to make it simple to create your own OpenSocial container by providing an open source implementation (in both Java and PHP) of the OpenSocial APIs. The Shindig team recently made creating and maintaining an OpenSocial container even easier, by publishing a release that supports OpenSocial v0.8.1.

Now, instead of checking out a specific revision or trying to keep up with the ever-changing trunk, OpenSocial container developers can use stable releases in their own websites. As issues come up, the Shindig community will fix them and roll them into the stable release, so developers will just need to grab the new version.

The Apache Shindig 1.0-incubating release is available on the downloads page of the Shindig website. If you've been running an older revision or branch, now's the time to update to known-good state. Of course, the Shindig folks have been busy, so if you're interested in new features, like templates and the streamlined JavaScript API, you can get all the OpenSocial v0.9 features by checking out the source -- and a stable release supporting OpenSocial v0.9 is already in the works!

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, on behalf of the Apache Shindig Team

The current generation of social applications has become increasingly interesting and attractive, with many apps sporting fancy animation effects and complex user interactions. One exciting result of this trend is the growing number of ActionScript developers in the community.

To support the development of OpenSocial apps using ActionScript, we are happy to introduce a new client library which exposes almost all of the OpenSocial v0.8 JavaScript APIs in native ActionScript 3 for Flash and Flex gadget developers. The library provides an event-driven development model that is prevalent in the ActionScript community, a FlexUnit-based testing framework, and samples for both Flash and Flex environments. We hope the library will ease the learning curve for ActionScript developers and shorten the development cycle. To check out the code, point your browsers to the Source tab linked from the ActionScript Client Library project page.

This library is completely open sourced under the Apache 2.0 license, and contributions are not only welcomed, but encouraged. In addition to a wiki page explaining the patch submission process, this project hosts an issue tracker which will be populated with known issues and requested enhancements. This tracker is the best place to start if you're interested in contributing to the project. Please use the tracker to report any new bugs or incompatibilities you find, or to request new features. You can also 'star' feature requests reported by other developers if they are significant to your own development. This will help us prioritize which bugs or features to work on next. Also, you are welcome to join the client library discussion forum and post your questions and feedback. We look forward to seeing you there!

Posted by Jacky Wang, OpenSocial Team

Today, social app developers must submit their applications on each of the dozens of OpenSocial containers in order to leverage the full potential of OpenSocial's wide distribution. Likewise, it's difficult for new containers to tap into OpenSocial's large developer base and find great apps for their sites. As a result, it's hard to tell just how many apps are out there and who's using them.

The OpenSocial App Directory is a community-wide effort to create a centralized location for developers and containers to submit, review, and share OpenSocial applications. In the initial release, we've included applications that are live on several popular sites that support OpenSocial, like MySpace, orkut, and hi5. Going forward, we plan to include approved apps from more containers, as well as allow developers to submit their own apps.

Please visit the Directory Info page to learn more about how to be included in the directory.

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, OpenSocial Team

Part of my recent exploration has been around the possibility of leveraging social networking for the enterprise, which has led me to explore many social networking technologies, including OpenSocial.

Social and professional networking revolve around people. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is also all about people, but with a bit of formality around the relationships between the people. In my CRM system, I have friends and colleagues, but I also have relationships with customers and potential customers (contacts and leads in the CRM parlance) that may be friends, professional acquaintances, or complete strangers.

Now, understanding that I have these formal and informal relationships, how do I combine the two in a way that respects all the aspects or characteristics of these relationships? That's a big question.

The Force.com platform allows you to address this question by leveraging social networks at the business logic level. That means your integration with a social network is not limited to users viewing apps on a page. Using OpenSocial's REST APIs, you can create solutions that work their magic behind the scenes, allowing true innovation in developing enterprise applications that leverage social and professional networks.

Salesforce.com is one of several companies building technology to help bring social elements to the enterprise. Next week at Google I/O several of us will be participating in an OpenSocial in the Enterprise panel where we (and you!) can help move this field forward. Come challenge us with your own thought-provoking questions about mixing social and enterprise. You can even start posting your questions now on this Q&A page and we'll address them next week.

Posted by Dave Carroll, Platform Evangelist - Salesforce.com

One of the major updates to OpenSocial in the latest version is a new programming model that allows you to send social data directly from the container to your application's server, where you can use the data to render any content you want to show the user. This model lets you use your existing presentation layer (faster coding!) and reduces the number of requests needed to pass social data between clients, containers, and your app server (faster apps!). Here's a closer look...

Many apps want to combine the social data from the container with the application data that lives on their server. In previous iterations of OpenSocial, many apps did something like the following:

Client requests profile and friend info from the container (via DataRequests)

Container responds with the social data

Client requests application data from a remote server (via makeRequest)

Container proxies request to remote server

Remote server responds to container with application data

Client combines the social and application data and presents it to the user (via JavaScript)

With v0.9's streamlined approach, the container can send social data to a remote server via "data pipelining" and you can combine that social data on your server, using your existing presentation layer, with a technique called "proxied content." The new flow looks like this:

Client requests an application view

The container sends social data to the remote server

The remote server combines social and application data, returning HTML and JavaScript

The container sends the content to the client

Much cleaner! These new features are already live on sandbox.orkut.com and will be coming soon to OpenSocial containers everywhere. To learn how to use data pipelining and proxied content in your OpenSocial app, check out this new tutorial.

Happy coding!

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, OpenSocial Team

A new version of the OpenSocial Specification hit the presses yesterday -- packed full of new features to make writing, testing, and maintaining apps much easier. From a streamlined JavaScript API, to a more efficient way to communicate between the app and your server, many of the OpenSocial v0.9 updates aim to make coding and rendering apps blazing fast.

If you're not familiar with the specification process, here's how OpenSocial evolves from one version to the next:

New ideas are proposed and discussed on the spec list (which anyone can contribute to).

Proposals that are selected by the community are prototyped to flesh out the details.

After a vote, the new version of the spec is published.

Containers implement support for the new spec.

App developers start using the new features.

Luckily, many of the prototypes for these new features were implemented in Apache Shindig, so they'll be coming to a container near you in short order. Keep an eye on your favorite container's blog for announcements (like this one) about when v0.9 features will be ready for you to check out.

Many of the folks who contributed to OpenSocial v0.9 will be at Google I/O in San Francisco on May 27-28. We love to talk about this stuff, so check out the Google I/O site to sign up and join us.

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, on behalf of the OpenSocial Community

OpenSocial v0.9 is coming right along, and we've prototyped some new features so that app developers can try them out. This stage in the iterative process is crucial to ensuring that containers are improving their OpenSocial platforms by adding the features that will make your apps more successful. Make your voice heard, and help improve the OpenSocial spec!

The first two prototypes to check out are data pipelining and OpenSocial templates. Data pipelining allows you to specify the data you want to use in your app, while templates let you describe how to render the app--all using a markup language (that's right, no JavaScript necessary!). Using data pipelining and templates will reduce the number of round trips between the container and your server, making your app render more quickly. Template values are also HTML-escaped, plugging many XSS vulnerabilities automatically.

Data Pipelining
To use data pipelining, add
<Require feature="opensocial-data">
to the ModulePrefs in your gadget spec. Then you can specify the data that you want by adding request tags to a
<Content>
section of your gadget spec. For example, to access the viewer's friends, include a tag like this:

<script xmlns:os="http://ns.opensocial.org/2008/markup" type="text/os-data">
<os:PeopleRequest key="friends" userId="@viewer" groupId="@friends">
</script>

Note that you set the
key
attribute in the
os:PeopleRequest
so that you can access the data returned. You can use the data to render a template (as shown below) or access the data using JavaScript like this:
opensocial.data.getContext().getDataSet('friends')
.

OpenSocial Templates
Once you've specified the data you need, you can use a template to display it. To enable templates in your app, include the following tags in your ModulePrefs:

<Require feature="opensocial-templates">
<Param name="process-on-server">true</param>
</Require>

Now you can add templates that define how to render social data. For example, to access the data specified above and print a list of the viewer's friends, include a template like this:

<script type="text/os-template">
<ul>
<li repeat="${friends}">
<span class="name" id="id${Context.Index}">${Cur.name.givenName}</span>
</li>
</ul>
</script>

This example illustrates several special variables in OpenSocial templates:

repeat - iterate over the 'friends' object by adding the
repeat
attribute to the  element.

Context.Index - an index for the object being repeated.

Cur - a reference to the current object.
WeekendApps was like a codefest on overdrive organized by a grassroots team of 9 people - Sudha Jamthe, Shuchi Rana, Waleed Abdulla, Alexandros Pagidas, Van Riper, Max Marmer, Carol Tran, Jason Cooper and David Doolin. Over the course of the weekend, more than 200 designers and developers came together at the Googleplex in Mountain View, CA last Friday to form teams, brainstorm new concepts for social applications, and then design and launch new social apps.

After three days, 30 pizzas, 200 sandwiches, 40 trays of Asian food, 20 boxes of junk food, 400 cups of coffee, and 10 sessions from Amazon, Sun, Google App Engine, orkut, MySpace, Yahoo!Open Strategy, we saw 14 OpenSocial apps launch on MySpace and orkut and awarded prizes to 15 developers.

The air was charged all weekend

Everyone in attendance was focused throughout the weekend, creating teams, thinking up app ideas, workout through app flow and tech hacks, deciding which containers to use, and rushing to launch by Sunday night for the grand prizes.

The event kicked off on Friday with a keynote by Kevin Marks, followed by a panel of top OpenSocial developers discussing how they monetize their apps with Offerpal. Then the fun began: teams formed, and top developers Dave Westwood, Nicholas Talarico, Ben Chow, and Randal Truong helped provide feedback on the app ideas. The process helped everyone understand what makes a successful social app, and teams bonded after learning more about the various skillsets needed to build great applications.

Saturday workshops

The next day, Shuchi loaded us with coffee and bagels (thanks to Sun and Offerpal), then Mike Culver of AWS, Fred Sauer of Google App Engine and Ravi Kota of Sun/Joyent gave workshops on hosting options.

To start building apps, there were some, like me, who translated from the Facebook world of FBML and FQL and learned OpenSocial. There were others who had to quickly decide which OpenSocial container worked best for them. Dave Westwood of BuddyPoke drove home the point that the audience on each network is different, so it is wise to plan an app with the differences between containers in mind. Max Newbould of MySpace, Jason Cooper of orkut, and Eric of Yahoo spoke about each of their OpenSocial containers, and Kevin from Offerpal helped people build virtual currency into their apps for monetization. Each workshop raised thoughtful questions on comparing platforms, containers, scalability, and many different application scenarios. We often came to consensus around tough issues and engaged everyone in the audience.

It was also great to see the community working together. Many app developers received personal guidance to overcome product hurdles with help from MySpace's Max Newbould and Google's Jason Cooper, and MySpace's team went the extra mile to make sure apps got approved by the Sunday deadline.

Photo story by Shirley X. Dave Westwood offered 500K free impressions to six apps that went live on orkut, including YumieDate, Bollywood Music, Flash Cards, Product Envy, R U Clubbin? and Buddy Quiz!.
A couple months back, the Gmail team added a few Labs experiments that let you add gadgets to Gmail's left nav. One of these experiments allows you to add any gadget by URL (i.e. pasting in the URL of its XML spec file). While the UI for adding gadgets is a bit klunky, people have already started building some interesting gadgets for Gmail.

Now Gmail supports OpenSocial APIs, so you can create social gadgets that make use of Gmail contacts. Gmail's contact manager has a few different groups (see screenshot below). The OpenSocial APIs use the 'Friends' group, the same list of of friends that the iGoogle sandbox uses.

Ready to try it out? To add a gadget to the left nav of your Gmail account, follow these steps:

Go to the 'Labs' tab under Gmail Settings.

Enable the 'Add any gadget by URL' experiment and click 'Save Changes.'

Now you'll have a 'Gadgets' tab under Settings.

Enter the URL of an OpenSocial gadget spec and click 'Add'.

Try adding the OpenSocial Dev app to take Gmail's OpenSocial support for a test drive. This gadget provides OpenSocial code samples that you can execute right in Gmail, as well as a 'Data Viewer' that will help you see what information you can access about people and friends.

Like all Gmail Labs, OpenSocial support is experimental and may change, break or disappear. You can find more info about Gmail's implementation of OpenSocial on the Gmail page of the OpenSocial wiki. If you have questions, please post them in the OpenSocial Application Development forum.

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, OpenSocial Team

Want to include Google Calendar events in your app? How about letting users interact with Blogger, Picasa, or YouTube? You can do all this and more by integrating with the Google data (GData) APIs. There is even a JavaScript client library so you can access Google data directly from your OpenSocial app.

I've been working on an OpenSocial application that integrates with the Google Calendar data API, but when I tried to create a calendar event I encountered an interesting problem: How can I access authorized resources from an application that lives inside a container? If you've used GData before, you're probably aware that some features of the APIs require authentication using AuthSub, which doesn't quite work when your app is hosted in an IFrame inside an OpenSocial container.

I've collected information on Google Accounts APIs, Google Data APIs, and OpenSocial in this article explaining my solution so you can integrate with GData, too.

To see what else I've been up to lately, check out my personal blog

Happy coding!

Posted by Ignacio Blanco, OpenSocial Developer

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, orkut team

We're getting ready to start deploying support for OpenSocial v0.8 on the orkut sandbox. Since there are some significant changes with v0.8, we've created prod.sandbox.orkut.com to help you maintain your existing apps, while using the sandbox to test new features.

There are only two differences between prod.sandbox.orkut.com and the real deal:

Your app can only access information about users that have been whitelisted for the sandbox.

You can install any app (not just those approved for the directory) by entering the URL in the Edit applications page.

Going forward, you should use prod.sandbox.orkut.com for testing and debugging the apps you're running in production. We will keep this environment stable and in sync with www.orkut.com.

The developer sandbox, sandbox.orkut.com, will be a bleeding edge environment. Updates to the JavaScript API and server-to-server APIs defined in OpenSocial v0.8 will be released on the sandbox first. While we're rolling out these changes, please help us find issues buy reporting bugs in the public issue tracker.

Keep an eye on this blog for updates on when OpenSocial v0.8 features will be available for testing on the sandbox.

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, orkut team

This week we have a guest author on the orkut developer blog. Sugumaran Uppili, from the Games2win team, will share some insights on how to use orkut communities to interact with your users and market your app...

Slapster began as an idea scribbled on a piece of paper, and now orkut users all over the site are totally slapping each other silly. At Games2win, we said to ourselves, “Hey! A whole lotta people enjoy Slapster. Let’s get them together and have a party!” Thus, the Official Slapster Community was born.

We didn’t have many Slapster users jumping on in the couple of weeks, but once we decided to included a link in our application to join the community we started to see thousands of users join. Now with more than 70,000 users in the Official Slapster community, all I have to say is "The more the merrier!"

The community has proven to be helpful in more than one way. What started out as an exercise in simply bringing people who like Slapster together, soon turned into a means for connecting to our users. They started telling us what they liked about Slapster, what they didn’t like, what could be improved. The community also gave us a channel for sharing news about our next project: Crapster! When Crapster was ready to launch users in the Slapster community were excited to see our latest offering! Crapster gained popularity quickly, proving that communities make great marketing tools as well.

So here’s a step by step guide to building and using communities as ways to promote your own apps and having fun while you’re at it:

Get yourself a killer app ;)

Create a community on orkut and invite everyone you know. In simple words, you have your horn, now blow it. Be sure to let everyone know that your community is the authentic, official one.

Place a link to the community on the app info page and also inside the app. This will make it easier for people to find your community and establish it as the official one.

Once you have people in your community you have to keep them busy. Start fun topics, polls, conversations, anything under the sun and have fun while you’re at it. In the midst of all the fun, you can also ask users what new features the app could use or what changes they would like to see.

So there you have it. The magic, not-so-secret, formula to a successful community for your app. Hope it helps :)

-Sugumaran

Got a tip to share with other orkut developers? Post your idea in the orkut developer forum and become a guest author on this blog!

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, orkut team

In order to deliver great apps to orkut users, the orkut team has put together some developer guidelines for you to follow. Being familiar with these guidelines will not only help your app get approved faster, but will also create a better experience for your users.

Here are a few common things we've asked developers to change after reviewing their submissions:

    Don't automatically post an update when the user installs or views an app.

Remove all ads from the profile view.

Be sure to use
gadgets.util.escapeString
to properly escape user input.

If your app is found to have policy issues, we'll contact you via the email address provided in the author_email attribute of the ModulePrefs element in your gadget spec (so be sure you're checking the account).

Another common issue we've seen is that some apps don't handle the case where the viewer hasn't installed the app. While your access to data is somewhat limited in this case, this is often a user's first impression of your app, so you want to make a good impression. If a user who has never heard of your app finds it on another profile and enjoys it, she is going to want to add it to her own profile and the trend will continue.

If you have any questions about orkut policies or best practices, the orkut developer forum is a great place to start the discussion.

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, orkut team

We've finished our rollout of OpenSocial apps to all orkut users, and we've seen more interest in apps than ever before. Several apps experienced extremely high usage, but after utilizing the URL rewriter and other caching techniques the load on their servers returned to manageable levels. During the rollout, we saw over 5 million app installs on orkut and usage of the platform continues to grow. But we're not done yet...

In the next few months, we'll be focused on increasing the capabilities of the platform and enabling developers to build better apps. Among our top priorities are finishing support for OpenSocial v0.8, including the RESTful API, and allowing access to albums and photos by extending the JavaScript API. Please continue to use the public issue tracker to report bugs and star the feature requests that are important to you.

On behalf of the entire orkut team, I'd like to thank all the developers who have contributed to the apps running on orkut. Now that your apps can reach the full set of orkut users, we look forward to seeing what you'll build next.

Happy Coding!

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, orkut team

The orkut team has been hard at work, making improvements to the performance and user experience of the application platform, preparing to complete our launch and enable OpenSocial apps for all users. We're going to perform this final roll out over the course of a few days, starting on July 10th, to help distribute the expected increase in traffic to your applications.

If you haven't already, now is the time to implement some of the caching and performance techniques that will help your servers survive this ramp up of new traffic. Here are a few strategies you should be using:

Render your profile view based on appData, not on data you receive from your server.
Profile views make up the lion's share of application renders. You can drastically reduce the number of requests hitting your server if you store information in appData so that you can render the profile view without pinging your third party server. It's also much faster to request data from the container - so your app will be the first to load on a user's profile.

Let orkut cache images and other static content for you.
You can use
getProxyUrl
to fetch a URL for the cached version of a static resource. Be sure to re-enable URL rewriting if you previously opted out. Also, be sure to use Cache-Control headers to maximize the benefits of caching.

Use <Preload> tags to fetch data from your server.
You can now send signed requests to your servers before your app is even finished loading—just add the
authz
parameter to your <Preload> tags. Orkut will also respect the cache headers you include in the response, which can greatly reduce the load on your servers.

You can find details on these and other best practices for performance in the Latency Tips for orkut article. Also, remember that a large percentage of orkut users speak Portuguese, so check out this article on localization.

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, orkut team

After several weeks of testing on the sandbox, the
opensocial.requestSendMessage
method, which enables users to send messages to other users straight from your application, has made its way to www.orkut.com.

This method has a quota of 10 invocations per user, per day. This means that a user can use the send message functionality 10 times per day across all apps. If a user enters multiple people in the 'to' field, that counts as a single invocation. Once a user reaches his or her quota, invoking
requestSendMessage
will result in a 'limitExceeded' error. If this happens, orkut will notify the user that their message wasn't sent.

For a recap of how to use this method, refer to this previous post.
Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, Developer Programs

We recently enabled OpenSocial apps for new set of users across the globe, increasing traffic by another 10%. Not only does this increase the number of users with access to your apps, it opens up new possibilities for apps with localized features and content. Keep in mind that we expect traffic to increase 5-10 times the current load once we've launched to all users, so start planning to scale now.

Today we enabled opensocial.requestSendMessage on the sandbox, creating a new way for your apps to let users communicate. The messages created with this method will be delivered as email or as orkut messages depending on the user's settings.

Here's some sample code to get you started:

function sendEmail() {
var params = [];
params[opensocial.Message.Field.TITLE]="Hola!";
var body="Como estas?";
var message = opensocial.newMessage(body, params);
var recipient = opensocial.DataRequest.PersonId.OWNER;
opensocial.requestSendMessage(recipient, message);
};

When invoked, the requestSendMessage method will cause orkut to display a dialog with the title, body, and recipient defined in your code, along with a text area where the user can add text themselves and then click a 'send' button. Note that you can also specify a specific user's OpenSocial ID instead of OWNER or VIEWER.

You can also use VIEWER_FRIENDS or OWNER_FRIENDS for the recipients parameter. In this case the user can determine which of the friends should received the message using an auto-complete friend picker form.

Note that on www.orkut.com each user will be able to send up to 10 messages per day. We'll be more lenient in the sandbox so you can test and tweak your messages.

Happy coding!

Posted by Jason Cooper, Developer Programs

With stage one of the orkut launch process behind us, it's time to start looking forward to the even bigger stage ahead—Brazil. Building applications for Brazilian users poses a special challenge for non-native developers. Since most of the Brazilian user base speaks Portuguese, most apps will have to be localized or translated so they can be understood.

Fortunately, the gadget specification (which all OpenSocial apps use) makes it easy to define localizations without duplicating any application logic using a mechanism called message bundles. To help you get started, we have released a new article on the OpenSocial wiki specifically on techniques you can use to localize your apps not only for Brazilian Portuguese but any language or country you please.

Enjoy! As always, if you have any questions, please stop by the discussion forum.

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, Developer Programs

We're pushing a new release to the sandbox today that includes a new component for running the app directory. The new directory system will provide dynamic ranking of apps, based on a number of factors including the locale of the user and the popularity of the app. Like search results on google.com, the order of apps will be determined by the directory's ranking algorithm and we won't have the ability to move individual apps around within the directory.

We're aiming to ship this new directory system to www.orkut.com next week. In the meantime, we'll be adding apps to the directory on the sandbox. The new directory speeds up our review process, so you'll start seeing a lot of new apps in the directory on the sandbox soon. We don't plan to add any new apps to the directory on www.orkut.com until we move the new directory system from the sandbox into production. At that point, any apps in the sandbox directory will go live in production.

Last but not least, today's release also includes a couple fixes to
requestNavigateTo
that popped up in the last few days. If you're still seeing problems, please file an issue.

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, Developer Programs

Over the past few weeks, we've been studying the behavior of apps on orkut and have discovered several ways to make them faster. We've made a few enhancements on our side that have improved response time considerably, like pre-fetching data requests—essentially retrieving the data your app will need before it's requested.

In addition to the efforts we've undertaken, there are optimizations you can make in your apps to improve their load times. There are some general web development best practices that are especially helpful in the OpenSocial context, and other techniques that are specific to OpenSocial and orkut, like using
gadgets.io.proxyUrl
to access cached resources rather than hitting your own server for each request.

Send your app through boot camp with this Latency Combat Field Manual and get your code up to speed.

Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, Developer Programs

We just pushed some new code to the sandbox that fixes the IE issues. As an added bonus, the MyApps page is now rendering the thumbnail and description specified in your app's ModulePrefs element, resolving this issue.

One side effect from this update is that if you're using the gadgets.views package, you'll need to include <require feature="views"><Require feature="views"/> in the <ModulePrefs><moduleprefs> of your gadget. This is because the "views" package is not part of the Gadgets Core API, as shown in the Gadgets API Reference

</moduleprefs></require>

To all the developers in India and Brazil, we hope you have a productive Thursday.
Posted by Lane LiaBraaten, Developer Programs

No, not that Europe!

It's easy to get our signals crossed, so we're launching this blog as a new channel for communicating features, bug fixes, sandbox status and other information directly to orkut developers. And what better subject matter for the first post than our plans for launching your OpenSocial apps on orkut?

We've seen some great application submissions and received a lot of feedback from developers at hackathons, in the developer forums, and in the public issue tracker. We're still working, but we're aiming to get our first release candidate (RC) on the sandbox this Friday, February 22. Here's a list of issues we plan to have fixed in the initial RC:

     Apps aren't rendering in IE - This is priority numero uno and will likely make it into the sandbox before Friday.

     Unable to fetch a Person by ID

     URL parameters sent to requestNavigateTo() are parsed incorrectly

     Signed requests are passing the wrong owner ID

     If a user hasn't set their profile photo, the API returns a bad URL.

You might have noticed that user-to-user messaging didn't make the short list. We know this is really important to application developers, and we're working to integrate this smoothly into the orkut user experience. Keep an eye on this blog--we'll be posting our plans for implementing this functionality soon.

Once the first RC is live on the sandbox, we'll need orkut developers (that's you!) to start kicking the tires. We'll post on this blog and in the developer forum and give you a 3 day window to continue developing your apps (and report any issues). Then we'll spend a couple days fixing any issues that you or our QA team finds.

After this 5-day trial period, if we're confident that the RC meets our quality bar we'll start rolling out OpenSocial apps to orkut users. We're going to start with a small number of English-speaking users (in Europe) and ramp up traffic over the following week or so.

We'll continue to update this blog with our progress. If you have any questions along the way, please post them in the orkut developer forum.

We're really excited to offer all the apps you've been building to orkut users. Let's work together through this final push to get your applications onto millions of profiles around the world.
