But what if you don’t have your phone with you? Or what if you’re in a place with poor cell phone reception, or you’re travelling internationally and don’t want to incur expensive roaming charges? Wouldn’t it be great if you could use your computer to make or receive calls?

Starting today you can use Gmail to receive or place Google Voice calls.

To get started, check the box next to Google Chat in your list of forwarding phones and the next time someone calls your Google Voice number, Gmail will notify you of an incoming call. You can take the call or even listen in as the caller leaves a message, in a single step right from your computer.

To make a call, just click the Call phone link in Gmail and enter any number or name from your address book.

All calls made from Gmail will display your Google Voice phone number as the outbound caller ID and all international calls will use your Google Voice calling credit and are offered at the same low Google Voice rates.

Update (5:05PM, August 9): This has now been rolled out completely.

Update (4:06PM, July 23): This new feature is not yet active for 100% of calls placed with Google Voice. We plan to roll this out for all calls in the next week or so.

-----

At Google we are obsessed with speed. Our mantra is faster = better. This is true for our Google Voice mobile apps as well. When you want to make a call, your phone should connect you as quickly as possible, whether you’re calling via Google Voice or not.

Today we are launching an enhancement to the Google Voice mobile app on Android and Blackberry phones, which makes placing calls much faster. We call this feature “direct access numbers.” Here’s how it works:

Until today, the Google Voice app had to make a request to the Google Voice server every time you wanted to make a call to send us the phone number you wanted to dial. Then the call would be connected via a Google Voice access number. With direct access numbers, we assign a unique phone number to every person you call. This means that we no longer need to use your data network to access the server each time you make a call, so calls will be placed much faster.

The updated Android app is available from Android Market starting today. For Blackberry users, you can download the app by visiting http://m.google.com/voice from your mobile device. You will need a valid Google Voice account to use the app, and at this time, Google Voice is available in the US only.

Posted by Flavio Lerda, Software Engineer

(Cross-posted from the Google Voice Blog)

We’ve found that Google Voice can be useful in many different ways to many different people. But one group of people that it’s especially well-suited for is students. We’ve heard college students in particular really appreciate getting their voicemail sent to their email, sending free text messages and reading voicemail transcriptions rather than listening to messages (especially handy while in class).

But since Google Voice is currently only available by invite, a lot of students are still listening to voicemail and sending text messages the old-fashioned way. As a recent college graduate, I can’t think of anything more painful! So starting today, we’ll be giving priority Google Voice invites to students. To get an invite, just visit google.com/voice/students and enter an email address that that ends in .edu.

So if you’re a student, submit your email address and a Google Voice invite will arrive in your inbox within 24 hours. Keep in mind that only one invite will be be sent per email address and Google Voice is currently only available in the U.S. And if you’re new to Google Voice, check out our introductory videos at youtube.com/googlevoice.

Posted by Jason Toff, Google Voice Team

Update (5/17): The response to this has been higher than expected. It might take us a little longer to get you your invites — but sit tight, they'll come as soon as possible.

Or when you’d return from vacation only to find your voicemail box was full and friends weren’t able to get through to leave messages for days?

Experiences like these were stripped from voicemail users across the country as a result of Google Voice. And, to be honest, some people on the team have started to miss these rituals of yonder years.
Using Google Voice for Android just got a whole lot faster. Until now, notifications of new messages appeared within 15 minutes of when they were sent. Today we are releasing a new feature called Inbox synchronization, which will notify your Android-powered device of new text messages or voicemails within seconds of receiving new messages in your Google Voice inbox.

To activate Inbox synchronization, open the Google Voice settings on your phone and touch Refresh and notification. Once you have selected the Synchronize Inbox option, you will start receiving faster notifications. Plus, Google Voice will automatically disable SMS forwarding to your mobile phone, so you won’t receive duplicate notifications.

Finally, we have made it much faster to interact with your contacts from the Google Voice app. Now you can click on any contact photo and get the option to quickly respond to voicemail by email or IM.

The updated app is available for download from Android Market today.
Posted by Jason Cooper, orkut team

Since the orkut application platform's April rollout, developers have been able to build applications on top of orkut user data using the OpenSocial JavaScript API. Version 0.8 of the OpenSocial specification added REST and RPC protocols, which enable developers to build applications that interact with OpenSocial containers over HTTP.

Today, I'm pleased to announce the availability of REST and RPC protocols in the orkut sandbox. Currently, these APIs can fetch profile information and app data as well as update app data, and more features are planned.

(Note: The REST and RPC protocols allow for the same operations, but the RPC protocol supports submitting multiple data requests in one container request, similar to the existing JavaScript API, which results in faster and more efficient applications.)

All REST and RPC requests must be digitally signed by the issuer, which allows orkut to verify that they are coming from a trusted application. Generating these signatures requires a secret key, which is known only to you and orkut. You can request a secret key by submitting a gadget URL to https://www.google.com/gadgets/directory/verify and verifying ownership of this gadget. More information on this process and authentication in general is available in the new REST Protocol Developer's Guide.

Last but not least, a set of client libraries have been made available for PHP, Java, Ruby, and Python to simplify development using these new protocols.
Posted by Jason Cooper, orkut team

Three months and many, many Shindig commits after the OpenSocial 0.8 specification was finalized this past May, we are happy to announce that the sandbox now has support for the updated JavaScript API. Starting today, you can begin the process of updating your apps to use OpenSocial 0.8 -- just add <Require feature="opensocial-0.8"/> to your application's ModulePrefs element and start coding!

The most substantial change in the updated API concerns the way user and app data is requested. With the introduction of the opensocial.IdSpec class, you will have to make some changes in order for your application to fetch or update data. To illustrate these changes and help get you started, here's a quick application that retrieves both the application's owner and the friends of the current user:

<Module>
<ModulePrefs title="My first OpenSocial app">
<Require feature="opensocial-0.8"/>
</ModulePrefs>

</Module>

For more on the data request updates, see this article on requesting data in OpenSocial, now updated for version 0.8.

Note that this is only an initial release of the updated JavaScript API and several other features defined in the full 0.8 update are not available with this release, namely REST/JSON-RPC APIs, lifecycle events, extended network distance, and new profile fields such as PRESENCE.

Along with support for the new JavaScript API, the infrastructure behind the existing API has also been updated to use the Shindig enhancements with a special adapter. Your existing applications should continue to work as they have before (as long as you keep <Require feature="opensocial-0.7"/> in your application's ModulePrefs element), but you should test them extensively in the sandbox to verify that there aren't any edge cases that cause your apps to break. If you do run into problems, make sure to let us know by filing a new issue in the public tracker and continue your development on prod.sandbox.orkut.com which is configured identically to production orkut.

OpenSocial 0.8 support is only available in the sandbox at present, so please wait to submit your new applications until 0.8 is rolled out to production orkut. We will post a new update on this blog when this is ready.

Have any questions or comments? As always, please feel free to post them in the orkut Developer Forum or stop by the official OpenSocial IRC channel at irc.freenode.net#opensocial during our regular office hour block every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. PDT.

Posted by Jason Cooper, Developer Programs

A recent push introduced a subtle but important distinction concerning how message bundles are specified, and your apps need updating to reflect this change.

Instead of identifying message bundles using language-country combination codes, you must now specify the language code only (pt vs. pt-BR). If you need to distinguish your bundles by country (e.g. U.S. English vs. U.K. English), you can add a 'country' element to your Locale element with the appropriate country code. The article on localization has more information as well as examples.

Message bundles for app meta information such as title and description are still identified using language-country combination codes. This is a bug which should be fixed in a future update. In the meantime, you can specify two Locale elements per language as in the set below. Notice that both reference the same bundle:

<Locale lang="pt" messages="http://www.example.com/pt_ALL.xml"/>
<Locale lang="pt-BR" messages="http://www.example.com/pt_ALL.xml"/>

This will ensure that both your application text as well as its meta information are displayed correctly.

Posted by Jason Cooper, Developer Programs

The big day is almost here! Tomorrow marks the beginning of the final stage of the application roll-out to orkut users, giving you several hours to get your apps in tip-top shape in order to handle the expected traffic increase ahead.

If you haven't already, it is absolutely imperative that you read the Latency Tips for orkut. It presents a number of techniques and best practices that you can take advantage of, even within the next few hours, to get your application up to speed.

Among the techniques listed is the use of Preload elements in your app spec. Preload elements allow for makeRequest responses to be preloaded while the gadget is rendering. If you use a lot of static makeRequest calls in your application (e.g. retrieving a user's high score or a list of gifts that have been sent from your app), taking advantage of pre-loading can make a big difference in the response time of your application. More information on pre-loading is available here.

One other technique that you may find useful is automatic URL rewriting. During preprocessing, orkut can automatically replace the URLs for static content (e.g. JavaScript files, style sheets, images, etc.) with proxied URLs, significantly reducing both the load on your servers and the loading time for your users. While rewriting is automatically enabled in the sandbox, you will have to opt-in in www.orkut.com. Instructions on how to do this are provided here. Make sure to thoroughly test your application if you opt in to rewriting, although you shouldn't run into any problems if you specify absolute URLs to your resources.

As a final note, please make sure that caching is enabled for your application's resources, particularly images and other large files that your app loads frequently. Due to a caching bug that affected many apps last week, you may have opted out of caching completely. This bug was patched last week, and orkut's caching infrastructure now honors both the Cache-Control and Expires headers returned by your application's host with a minimum refresh rate of five minutes. Please make the necessary changes to your server configuration to set your cache to expire at most once per hour (the default duration if no cache control headers are set). Not only will this take some strain off of your own servers, but your users' experience will improve greatly as a result.

We'll be monitoring the performance of your applications. If we see your servers buckle under the increased traffic, we will suspend your application by removing it from the directory and user profiles until your host can be updated to accommodate the traffic. We really don't want to do this, so use the next several hours to read the tips and get your apps ready.

Mom always taught us to share and now we know why, because it's fun. As of tonight, Google Reader has the ability to share what you like to read with your friends. You can send a link to your starred items in Reader, or you can put a clip on your blog with recent items from your reading list (as shown below).

Give this a little test drive if you like, preview 'My starred items' in Google Reader. If you like my list you can subscribe to it from the preview screen.

Additionally, if you use the <strike>tagging</strike> labeling feature of Reader, you can label items and share them. For instance, I mark all of the blogs I read from my hipster friends in Reader 'hipsters' (if my hipster friends aren't your speed try my tech list). Even if your friends use a feed reader other than Google Reader, we won't be upset. You can direct them to a feed of any of your shared labels.

You control the privacy or shared nature of your lists. To begin sharing your reading lists or add a clip to your blog, go to reader.google.com and open the Share tab. Check the 'shared' check box to opt-in to sharing your starred items or selected labels. Enjoy!

Update on 3/23 by Mihai: I've posted some more techy information about sharing on my blog.

I don't like to use my laptop on my lap, because of heat and other reasons, and I don't like to be pushing the 'J' key very often, so I downloaded "JoyToKey" to use my gamepad for browsing Google Reader.

Earlier this week we pushed out a new release of Reader. Most of the changes are under the hood and should make for a faster, smoother experience. However, there were a few user interface tweaks too. My favorite is support for the
space
keyboard shortcut. In all browsers, pressing the space key moves down in the current page. Reader's addition to that is to advance to the next item if you're at the end of the current one. This means that you can read your entire reading list with just one finger press! I'm sure there is some sort of Pavlov's dog joke to be made here, but we can't take too much credit for the one-click advance, since it's been present in email clients for ages.

Here's a more complete list of other changes we've made:

Progress messages for most operations.

Usability tweaks when subscribing to feeds.

Stopped using "click here" for link text (thanks for reminding us Philipp).

Fixed OPML import issues for Newsgator users.

Fixed issues with item links in some Planet and Odeo feeds.

Fixed Firefox issue that made it eat up the entire CPU when loading items.

We plan on keeping the features and improvements going strong. Feedback = better Reader. Thanks for your help.
