YouTube has always been a place for you to share and enjoy videos with family and friends. Soon, we'll be making it even easier for you to find people you know on the site. We'll start by launching a "You may know these people" suggestions box on the homepage over the next few weeks that shows you the YouTube channels of people who might be your acquaintances, and lets you easily connect and subscribe to them.

How will we make the suggestions? If you've logged in to YouTube and sent a video to a friend's email address, or if you have your YouTube account linked to a Gmail account, we will use this information to help identify your friends who already have YouTube channels. You'll only see channels whose owners have allowed themselves to be found by others who have their email address.

Want to see if you've previously allowed your channel to be found by others who have your email address, or want to change your settings? Just log in and visit the "Privacy" section of My Account. Look for the checkbox at the top that says "Let others find my channel on YouTube if they have my email address."

Elizabeth Windram, Senior User Experience Designer, recently watched "Folding-Time at Burning Man 2005: One Month at The Man."

Hooray! The new Google Talk features (file sharing, voicemail, and music status) have completed testing and are now available to everyone. Just use Google Talk normally, and it will auto-update to the new version over the next few days. If you just can't wait, you can download the new version directly. Each of the new features will be discussed here shortly, but I'm going to cover file transfer.

File and photo sharing in Google Talk works like you'd expect: Simple, fast, and fun. Simplicity means that you can drag and drop one or more files directly onto a chat window. As soon as your friend clicks 'Accept', the bits will start flowing. When the transfer completes, the recipient can open the file or find it on disk with a single click.

File transfer is fast. Google Talk makes a direct connection to your friend's computer whenever possible, enabling the fastest speed available. And even if your super-secure firewall won't allow a direct connection, we'll still get it there at a decent speed, because we're nice like that.

Photo sharing is fun! When you drop up to 10 photos on Google Talk, smaller previews automatically appear right inside the chat window, so you can chat about them right away. The previews adjust to the size of your chat window, so just enlarge the window when you want to see more detail. To view the images at full size, or to save them for later, click the 'Download Originals' link.

Brian McBarron
Software Engineer

P.S. Sharing folders works, too! Drop a folder onto Google Talk to share all of the directory's contents (including any subdirectories). It's an easy way to send a whole bunch of files to a friend.

If you're anything like me, you're probably a big fan of Google Talk's simple, uncluttered interface. A sleek roster, and a chat history that reminds you of Notepad. I know you're thinking, "I love Notepad!" and hey, who doesn't? But we thought some of our users might appreciate a little added color and design in their conversations. For this reason, we've created Chat Themes.

Chat themes change the appearance of your IM conversations. We've included several styles for you to choose from. Simply open Google Talk's Settings and select the new "Appearance" section. You'll see the name of the currently selected theme, along with a sample preview displayed below. Click on the theme name to see a list of alternatives. My favorite is Serene Picture. You'll notice that for most themes, there is a version with and without pictures. User pictures are another nice new feature of Google Talk, but we realize that some might see them as a distraction.

As hard as it is to imagine, some users might not be satisfied with any of the nine themes that we have provided. They may wish someone else would create more themes. Indeed, some enterprising Google Talk users have done just that. They've discovered that, under the hood, themes are just a few html and css files stored in Google Talk's application data folder. They might even notice a similarity to the theme files used by Adium. There is more than a passing resemblance, and if you drop an Adium theme into the proper directory, you might expect it to work in Google Talk! Unfortunately, it probably won't. Most Adium themes make use of CSS 2.1, which is not well-supported by Google Talk's html renderer.

At this point, you are probably thinking, "Wow, you could have made it easier for us to create, install, and share new themes." You're right. That's a darn good idea. I'll add it to my to-do list, right now. First, let me fire up Notepad...

Brian McBarron
Software Engineer

P.S. We're still experimenting with this new feature (as well as lots of other cool ideas), so the theme format may change in the near future. After all, we're still in beta!
