Communication is a key component to Affiliate marketing, so it’s no surprise that advertisers and publishers exchange a lot of email. With the peak shopping season coming up, it’s critical for publishers to stay informed of important advertiser program changes to make the most of their affiliate marketing efforts. To make it easier for publishers to keep track of important account notifications from within the Google Affiliate Network interface, we’ve launched a new Notifications system.
Types of notifications
If you’re a publisher, starting today you’ll receive a notification whenever an advertiser makes a change to their account that impacts your relationship or commissions. For example, if an advertiser invites you to join their program, this invitation will appear in your notifications. You’ll also receive a notification when an advertiser makes a decision on your application to their program. Other examples of the notifications you’ll receive include Commission rate changes or updates to Advertiser Specific Terms.
From the Publisher Home, you’ll see a notification alert in the upper right corner of the interface that displays the number of pending messages. When you click on the alert, you can see more information along with a link to see all notifications.
When you click the Notifications tab, you’ll see a basic summary and detailed view for each communication. You can search across notifications and advertisers so you can more easily review and act on affiliate-specific notifications while you’re working in your account.
This launch is the first of a series of enhancements to communications within the Google Affiliate Network interface. For a long time, we’ve listened to your feedback that adding a central communication hub could help increase efficiency and reduce the need to simply rely on your email inbox for important communications. Today’s launch is the first step we’re making towards this hub. Our vision is to move more communications into a central location in interface so you can better track and maintain your affiliate relationships and activities.
Send your feedback
We welcome your feedback. If you have any suggestions, let us know what you think by posting a comment here or in the Google Affiliate Network forum. Sign in to your account today to access the Notifications tab.

When we began building the new YouTube app for Nintendo Wii, we wanted to make video playback smooth and beautiful. This meant squeezing the most available power from the console CPU and fitting the video decoding process within the tight bounds of available memory. After trying out several video encoding formats on Wii, we found that 360p WebM encoding performed the best. With the largest install base of current generation consoles, YouTube on Wii is the largest deployment of WebM video in the world today.
WebM is particularly well-suited to devices where available memory is limited, because of its technical approach to video encoding. VP8, the video codec in WebM, uses reference frames (called alternative reference frames, or “alt-ref”) from which adjacent video frames are derived and compressed. This type of compression is commonly used in modern video encoding schemes, but VP8 uses the technique with particular efficiency, which results in a smaller memory footprint and smoother video playback on Wii.
We went one step further and performed low-level optimization of the VP8 decoder specifically tuned to the Wii’s processor. This included: using paired-single floating point operations to perform motion compensation, loop filtering, and idct; using the GPU to do color conversion and scaling; and dcbz instructions to copy buffers. This kind of optimization is available to anyone, as the VP8 code is open source under a BSD license.
We’ll keep looking into other ways we can use WebM, so stay tuned on this blog to learn more.

Back in May, we announced the winners of the 2012 Model Your Town Competition, Josetxo Perez Fernandez and Pedro Domecq Aguirre, who modeled the beautiful town of Getaria, Gipuzkoa, Spain.
Recently, a team of folks from both SketchUp and Google traveled to Getaria to celebrate Josetxo, Pedro, and Getaria’s citizens. Let’s just say Getaria has pretty much the best fish and friendliest people you’ll find anywhere in the world. The local school, Herri Iturzaeta Eskola, received $25,000 from Google, which was presented during an assembly at the school. Josetxo and Pedro led an inspiring session on how they created their models. Judging by the excitement in the room, we expect there will be some 3D wonder-kids in Getaria’s future.

Citizens of Getaria also welcomed us at the new Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, for a reception and tour. The museum’s collection of Spain’s most famous fashion designer is a big point of pride for Getaria, and not to be missed if you’re ever visiting Basque country.
We congratulate Josetxo and Pedro on creating such incredibly beautiful SketchUp models. You can explore Getaria for yourself in Google Earth and then compare the 3D models to the real thing in this photo gallery of our visit.
